ASUS Eee PC 1000HE

ASUS Eee PC 1000HE Review

Asus continues to define the netbook standard with the new Eee PC 1000HE. Although the difference compared to previous 10-inch models is quite miniscule it continues in the Eee PC tradition of providing good value for your money.

One of the improvements in the 1000HE is a slightly faster Atom N280 CPU at 1.66GHz (compared to the N270 at 1.6GHz) with a higher FSB speed – 667MHz instead of 533MHz). The difference here is noticeable but just barely.

Design

Asus insists on using glossy surfaces on most of the Eee series netbooks, which looks nice but also attracts a lot of fingerprints. From the front you can see the tilted aluminum colored trackpad buttons even when the lid is closed, and it also has four LEDs to indicate power, hard drive activity, wireless and battery.

The Eee 1000HE makes good use of the limited space available and has a near full-size keyboard (92% of standard notebook size) and an easy to use, large trackpad with forward-angled buttons. The slanting buttons feel a little strange at first, but once you get used to them you wonder why it’s not more common.

Overall, Asus has done a great job with the design of the 1000HE, even if very little has changed since previous models. But why change a good thing?

Features and Performance

In-depth performance comparisons and benchmarking don’t make as much sense with netbooks as with full-size laptops, since most of them use almost identical components. Naturally a 0.06GHz increase in CPU speed does not make for a big performance difference, but it provides a small boost thanks to the increased front side bus speed. On average its performance is slightly above par in the netbook segment.

ASUS claims that it can provide a battery life of up to 9.5 hours, but that probably requires that you keep it on idle with screen brightness turned down and WLAN turned off for the duration, but you can still squeeze nearly transatlantic battery times out of the 6-cell – 7 hours and 10 minutes in our general usage test, a great result nonetheless.

Connectivity

All of the ports are placed on the sides of the notebook – the left side has an Ethernet port, one USB and audio line-in and line-out. On the right side is a memory card reader, another 2 USB ports and VGA out. The Wi-Fi card offers support for draft-n, which gives you access to the fastest wireless technology at the moment.

Conclusion

The ASUS Eee PC 1000HE is a bit bulky compared to some “premium” and more expensive netbooks, but all in all you get a lot more for your money with the Eee compared to other brands. Its keyboard and trackpad are very comfortable to use, and the system is very well built. The best part, however, is the 7+ hours of battery life you can squeeze out of it, which is way better than average.

Today we bring you a review of Asus’ F6Ve, hot off the Laptop Logic test bench. The F6Ve comes equipped with an Intel Core 2 Duo T9550 CPU running at 2.66GHz, 4GB DDR2-800 RAM, and a 320GB hard drive. Will all this nice hardware be enough to make the Asus shine? Let’s find out.

Case look and feel

Looking at the exterior of the F6Ve, you’re greeted with a shiny, gloss black lid, with a slight “Libera” swirl design if you look really closely. If you’re anything like me, the first thing that comes to mind when you see it is “fingerprint magnet”, and sure enough, you’ll want to keep a rag handy to wipe down the smears from time to time (luckily for you, Asus includes a cloth to clean the LCD and lid). It sure does look good, though.

Opening the lid, the dark theme extends inside, with black keys and touchpad, a matte black bezel surrounding the LCD, and dark gray palm rest. Visually, it’s a very handsome unit.

Size & Weight

The F6Ve measures 12.28” wide x 9.13” deep x 1.26-1.39” high and weighs 4.39 pounds, making it very portable. It was light enough to hold with one hand, and its 13.3-inch display is my personal sweet spot when it comes to portable computing.

Keyboard & Mouse

One interesting feature included by Asus in the F6Ve is a “perfumed” keyboard. Yes, you read that right. Perfumed. From Asus’ product page:

”Complementing this is the F6Ve’s ‘perfumed’ keyboard which is available in 2 scents, namely ‘Musky Black’ for the F6Ve-1I, and ‘Morning Dew’ for the F6Ve-1J. Once turned on, the scent is released to provide a soothingly calm atmosphere for day to day computing anytime, anywhere.”

Sure enough, when you turn the laptop on and it gets warmed up, you can definitely smell a scent. At first I thought my wife had left a basket of clean clothes nearby, as it smelled kind of like a dryer sheet. Certainly a weird feature, but still kind of cool and is definitely not something you see every day.

Scents aside, I felt the keyboard was lacking in the F6Ve. It was kind of mushy during use, and visibly flexed when keys at the top left side were depressed, most notably the first few function keys and numbers 1-4. I’ve been reared on ThinkPads since an early age, so to me this was a big turn-off. Despite Asus’ claim that the F6Ve features a “full size” keyboard, I found some keys (PgUp, PgDn, End, and Home) to be a little too small and found myself fat fingering when attempting to use them. The key travel distance was pretty decent, however.

The mouse also was a big letdown. The scrollpad wasn’t the most responsive unit I’ve used, and the buttons were very stiff. I found myself having to press harder than normal to get clicks to register. In addition, scrolling itself was kind of weak. Sometimes the scrollpad didn’t realize that my finger was swiping over it and I had to redo the same motion once or twice to get the cursor moving.

I would say out of everything on the Asus F6Ve, this was the area that could use the most improvement.

Display Quality

Which brings us to one of the F6Ve’s biggest strengths- its display. Despite only being 1280x800, the 13.3-inch glossy screen is sharp and vibrant, with nice popping colors. The viewing angle was above average and glare and reflection seemed slightly less than many other glossy screens out on the market. I was able to watch a DVD with my wife and both of us, despite not being directly in front of the screen, were able to see it just fine. In fact, my wife made a comment about it looking great on the screen, and this is coming from someone who normally hates glossy screens and avoids them like the plague.

Connectivity

On the left side, you will find 2x USB 2.0 ports, Wi-Fi enable/disable switch, 1x e-SATA, Express card, 8-in-1 card reader (SD, MMC, MS, MS-Pro, mini SD w/ adapter, MS-Duo, MS-Pro Duo via adapter), 1x HDMI, and AC input. One thing to note was that I didn’t really care for the placement of the AC input; I prefer them on the back side, as the F6Ve’s dug into my left leg on occasion.

On the rear, you will find the modem, RJ-45, and VGA ports, flanking the protruding 3-cell battery.

All in all, a very nice selection of ports. I was glad to see HDMI as well as VGA.

Features

The F6Ve has you well covered on the wireless front. Featuring Bluetooth 2.1 and Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5100 ABGN, you should have no problems getting connected to your network or teaming your phone, mouse or other Bluetooth peripherals to the laptop.

The F6Ve features a pretty standard 1.3MP webcam, but what makes it kind of neat is the included software that adds silly stuff to the pictures like big glasses, a cowboy hat, etc. My two year old loved this particular feature when I took some pictures of him while he was in his high chair, even though it doesn’t hold a candle to the iSight suite included with Apple MacBooks.

The hinges found on the F6Ve were pretty good. Despite being plastic, they felt pretty strong and durable. Wedged in between the mouse buttons, you will find a biometric fingerprint scanner, which we found to work just as it was intended. Slightly off to the right, set in the palm rest, is a small pinpoint hole for the microphone. An interesting location for one, but it seemed to work out okay.

Inside the product box, Asus was kind enough to include a Targus laptop bag. I thought this was a nice touch on Asus’ part, since it will save you a few bucks down the road.

Another neat feature included with the F6Ve is the Express Gate application suite. There’s a dedicated button on the left side above the keyboard that when pressed, boots the laptop directly into the Express Gate menu without first booting into Windows. It only takes a few seconds to load a barebones OS that allows you to play online games of several varieties; view your photo gallery; play music; access chat apps like AIM, load a web browser, or even load up a Skype app to make calls over the internet. I’ve always thought a pre-boot OS like this is a cool thing to have, especially if you just want to check something fast without waiting for Vista to boot up.

Performance

So, looking at the F6Ve on paper reveals that this packs a lot of hardware in a relatively small package. A 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo T9550 CPU, 4GB DDR2-800 RAM, 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD4570… sounds like a winner. So why Asus included a 32-bit version of Vista Home Premium is anybody’s guess. By not including a 64-bit version of Windows, only 3.25GB of RAM is seen by the OS, due to 32-bit memory addressing limitations. 750MB of RAM is just – poof – gone.

But, despite that, based on the included hardware specs, we did expect the F6Ve to do pretty well in the benchmark tests.

Again, the F6Ve shows well here in the CPU and memory scores, and a surprisingly strong showing in the HDD category as well. In the comparison testing, the Asus did very respectably against the gamut of business laptops, but ultimately the SSD in Lenovo's ThinkPad T400s propelled its score far above the rest.

I was a bit disappointed with the score here. While the Asus is definitely more of a gaming machine than other laptops its size, it still isn't up to snuff with the latest technologies. 3DMark06 is a relatively old benchmark and it is still only so-so. As you can see, the Alienware M17's ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3870 X2 dual GPU setup blew away the Asus and while dual GPU's might be a bit overkill for most, something closer to the 3870 is needed to make for a reasonable gaming experience these days. We did run the Crysis demo benchmark, but it was a slideshow.

Battery Performance

Asus gives you the option to purchase the F6Ve with your choice of 3-, 6-, or 9-cell battery configuration. Our test unit shipped with the 3-cell battery. FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THAT IS HOLY spend the extra bucks to get the upgraded battery. Battery life in the F6Ve was a joke, and a bad one at that. Even when sitting idle, it never came close to breaking two-and-a-half hours. I’ve seen Alienware SLI gaming laptops with similar battery life, which is just inexcusable, unless all you use your laptop for is a quick email check and then you plug it back in.

We ran the F6Ve through several battery tests in an attempt to best simulate “average” use. The software used to accomplish this was Battery Eater 05.

Battery Performance – “Classic” Test

This is kind of akin to a “minimum” test, i.e. this test should give you the lowest battery time of the bunch. In this one, a 3D spinning AA battery is rendered continuously until the battery runs out. In this “classic” test, the F6Ve managed only a stunning 1 hour and 19 minute runtime. I had to run this one over again to make sure it was right, and sadly, it was.

Battery – “Text” Test

The last battery test I ran utilizing Battery Eater was their “Text” benchmark. You specify a text file for the program to “read”, and then it scrolls through the file in slightly faster than real-time reading speed. I grabbed Tolstoy’s “War and Peace” from Project Gutenberg and loaded the benchmark up. Maybe it’s because the book is so boring, but the F6Ve only mustered 2 hours and 13 minutes before shutting down.

Battery Performance - DVD Playback

This final test was run to see how long the F6Ve would last while a user watched a DVD. I loaded up Michael Mann’s masterpiece “Heat” and set about seeing what happened.

Well, I was let down here too. The F6Ve lasted all of 1 hour and 41 minutes into the nearly three hour movie. I wasn’t even able to see the killer bank robbery shootout scene between De Niro and crew vs. the LAPD. For shame.

Real-life usage

Noise-wise, the F6Ve was pretty exceptional. I rarely heard the fans kick on for any extended period of time under real world use. In terms of heat output, I’d say it was average, with a decent amount being exhausted out of the vent on the left side. During the Crysis benchmark, the most hot air was pouring out, and the fan was at its noisiest, but that was to be expected.

The F6Ve was portable and easy to carry or fit in a bag. The keyboard was okay to type on for average periods of time, but any long missives you may need to write should be saved for your desktop machine.

I used the F6Ve mostly for web browsing, and watching videos on Hulu and Youtube. For these activities, the F6Ve was a shining star. As mentioned earlier, video looks remarkably good, even at crappy Youtube resolution, and the F6Ve was great for getting my daily fix of gadget blogs. If you notice though, these were all activities that didn’t require a great deal of mouse usage, so I suppose these results may be a bit skewed because they don’t really exploit the laptop’s biggest weakness, which is the touchpad and mouse buttons.

Conclusion

On the whole, the Asus F6Ve was a pretty nice notebook. The Intel Core 2 Duo T9550, 4GB DDR2-800 RAM, and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 made for a nice package, especially considering it currently retails for $1199 at Newegg. That’s a lot of hardware bang for the buck. But, like I mentioned earlier, don’t even think about this laptop without getting the upgraded battery.

There’s one thing that would stop me from unconditionally recommending this laptop… and that is the abysmal mouse/trackpad. It just wasn’t responsive enough, and I found myself more often than not fighting it just to get it to go where I wanted. The mouse buttons were very stiff and non-responsive, and while you could solve the whole problem by plugging in a USB mouse, that negates the notion of a truly “mobile” computer, which is unfortunate, considering everything else this laptop has going for it.

Overview

Asus may not be the common household name this side of the computing world but they've come out with a notebook computer that will surely impress anyone to take a closer look at their offerings. The ASUS W7J is loaded with features you won't find in a laptop of this class. That's a good thing, because ASUS is entering the increasingly competitive 13' widescreen laptop category battling the likes of big players, including Sony and Apple, for supremacy. So to stand out, ASUS impresses with a laundry list of standard features put together in a powerful and stylish package.

To begin with, the W7J is equipped with a 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo T2400 processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a 100GB SATA hard drive spinning at 5400RPM, and a gorgeous 13.3' widescreen WXGA LCD with ASUS' Color Shine and Crystal Shine technology. Even more impressive is the inclusion of a dedicated nVideo GeForce Go 7400 video graphics chip, Bluetooth and WiFi 802.11a/b/g wireless communications, a 8X DVD-RW optical drive, and a 1.3mp digital web camera. Wrap all these goodies into a 4.3lb unit and you have a laptop computer that is loaded with power yet portable enough to be versatile in any situation or use. Aside from a few minor design quirks, the ASUS W7J presents itself as an exceptional value for gamers, business users and multimedia enthusiasts alike. And the $1499 MSRP price of entry is just pure icing on the cake.

Design

Portability
While the ASUS isn't the thinnest laptop around at 1.45', it is very light (4.3lbs) thus making travel easier on the shoulders and arms.

Case and Design
The W7J comes in either black or white finish. It's not the cleanest looking design around, particularly from the sides, but it is stylish. However you want to describe its appearance, it's handsome no doubt. Each corner has soft rounded edges to make the laptop easier to hold and carry. Silver lining is placed around to add a touch of elegance. Simple yet classy, indeed.

Open the hinge and you're presented with a beautiful 13.3' LCD widescreen on the top half. The built-in webcam sits ontop of the screen and is accented with silver finishing. The webcam also breaks the cleanliness of the laptop design by functioning as a protruded latch opening. Right below the monitor are directional speakers that blend well with the clean designs already established.

The ASUS uses a combination of carbon fiber and plastic all around to give the laptop its lightweight attributes. The black test model we received has a matte-like finish and feel which really gives off a sense of high quality. As with any product that is available in black, the W7J is susceptible to finger prints on the casing so grubby hands beware! No flexing was evident. Immediately you can tell the laptop has a sense of sturdiness. Fit and finish is also very good.

A status indicator panel is also built on the lower edge of the keyboard area. From left to right, you have indicator lights for Power On, Battery, Disk activity, WiFi, Caps Lock, and Bluetooth.

Keyboard
Having a stylish laptop is pointless if it is not comfortable to type with, and fortunately the ASUS' keyboard works as good as It looks. The keyboard has good tactile response with each key press. Key travel is just right. However, it's the layout of the Enter, Backspace and right Shift keys that many may find fault with. These keys are made smaller such that the Page and arrow keys could be squeezed into the far right corner of the keyboard. Thus, it is really easy to hit the wrong keys than as intended. I, personally, didn't have problems with the layout but it can pose as an annoyance to some. Aside from this small caveat, the keyboard is otherwise comfortable to use. But there is one thing

For those with longer hands like myself, the keyboard may be placed too low leaving minimal space to rest the palms. I found this rather uncomfortable after prolonged use. Moving the keyboard higher up would have easily solved this problem.

Touchpad
The touchpad is standard affair as far as touchpads go but it is wider to go with the laptop's widescreen display. Response is good and the surface is smooth. One quibble I do have is the rather small buttons for mouse clicks. The blue LED splitting the left and right buttons is a nice ambient touch though .

Connectivity Options

Front
There isn't a mechanical or magnetic latch mechanism to secure the laptop shut. There is enough weight on the screen to allow the top half the seal securely. Instead, the protruding webcam housing serves as a handle lift for allowing easy open and close with minimal effort. The panel gaps are very tight and minimal thanks to the recessed keyboard layout. Very nicely designed.

Rear
The rear panel contains the power port, S-Video out port, one high-speed USB 2.0 port and security slot. The battery is also located here.

Left Side
On the left side, you will find data ports for Ethernet/LAN and telephone jacks, one USB 2.0 port, DVD-RW optical drive, and a 4-in-one media card reader which accepts MMC/SD/Memory Stick/Memory Stick PRO formats.

Right Side
On the right and front half, you have the volume control, microphone in jack, a headphone out jack which also doubles as a S/PDIF digital optical input, and an IEEE1394 FireWire port. Right above is the newly standardized Express Card slot. Next to these ports is a large air vent followed by another USB 2.0 port and a VGA-out port. As you can see, the ASUS has every possible input you need for modular and multimedia expansion.

Express Card
The new Express Card standard allows for a wide array of future expandability and is faster than the older PC card slots of yore and smaller too. Express Card utilizes the bandwidth of the PCI Express bus.

Heat and Noise
In my week long use of the W7J, heat and noise was never an issue. The unit stayed remarkably quiet in general use. You can still hear the fan nevertheless, but the noise is very subdued and almost silent like. You'll hear the sound of the hard drive and optical drive more so than the fan. It was only with more intensive tasks such as gaming and DVD playback that the fan was noticeably louder but still quieter than other laptops I've used. The laptop does run warm after awhile but never hot. Thankfully, you'll never feel that uncomfortable burning sensation that Apple MacBook users have been experiencing. Most of the heat is ventilated out to the right side as the fan blows warm air out from the vent. Considering the minimal amount of heat emitted, this is good news for those who type on the go. I commend ASUS for designing a well ventilated laptop while keeping the machine remarkably quiet.

Upgrading and Expansion
Upgrading the ASUS laptop couldn't be easier. There are 3 expansion bays requiring the use of a Philips head screwdriver to open up. Each bay only has 2 screws to remove. Installing additional RAM modules or replacing a new hard drive is pretty straightforward and ASUS even imprints the component's logos to help you identify which expansion door to open. As can be seen in the picture below, the bottom expansion bay provides access to the laptop's hard drive. Right above it you'll find access to the fan and processor. The small door to the right is where the RAM is installed.

Features

Technical Specifications
The ASUS W7J employs Intel's Core Duo processor clocking in at 1.83GHz. It's not the fastest around, but plenty fast for the most demanding tasks. The Core Duo chip also is embedded with 2MB of shared L2 cache with a 667MHz Front Side Bus. 1GB of 533MHz DDR2 RAM is included. While doing research of the system's internals online, I find out that the laptop's motherboard can actually handle faster 667MHz RAM. ASUS must have skimped out on the faster modules to keep costs down. Also, it appears half of the memory (512MB) is actually embedded into the motherboard, making expansion limited to one module only.

The ASUS comes standard with a 2.5' 100GB SATA disk drive that spins at 5400RPM. Its performance is much better than the usual 4200RPM units of typical laptops. The disk drive performs relatively quiet.

Laptop speakers generally are mediocre and flat sounding, and the ASUS is no exception. The speakers are mounted directly below the LCD screen and provide distortion-free sound. Audiophiles and gamers will want to use external speakers or separate headphones for a better aural experience.

Display
The biggest element that will obviously get people to take notice of the ASUS W7J is indeed, its beautiful widescreen display. The 13.3' WXGA runs natively at 1280 x 800 resolution and incorporates ASUS' Color Shine (glare type) technology to greatly enhance image contrast and picture quality. Colors are as crisp as they are rich. Similar to Sony's XBRITE technology, Crystal Shine technology (high brightness) ensures the colors are at its brightest and clearest, even in outdoor situations. The results are absolutely stunning and a sight to see. Unfortunately, the glossy screen induces glare making it hard to see from certain angles.

Image quality is impressive making DVD movie watching a pleasure. Colors pop out with increased vibrancy and brightness. And darks remain dark. Text was very clear and sharp.

The 13.3' widescreen has just the right amount of screen real estate allowing you to work with 2 windows side-by-side with relative ease and clarity. The onscreen setup icons that work with the Fn keys are a nice feature for adjusting monitor settings on the fly.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
The ASUS W7J comes built-in with the Intel PRO/Wireless 3945ABG miniPCI wireless network card, part of the 'Centrino Duo' trio (CPU, Chipset & Wi-Fi) technology. This allows the laptop to connect to any industry standard 802.11a/b/g network. The switch on the top left of the keyboard allows you to toggle or disable the wireless signals, including Bluetooth. In terms of real world wireless performance, signal strength and download speeds were very good with no noticeable issues or signal cutoffs.

The laptop also has Bluetooth featuring EDR 2.0 for syncing up with compatible wireless devices. Unfortunately, during testing I did not have an EDR-compliant device to test it with, but the laptop did recognize my Bluetooth-capable cell phone and I was able to transfer and exchange contacts through Microsoft Outlook.

1.3MP WebCam
Mounted at the top of the bezel of the LCD panel is a built-in 1.3mp web camera ideal for video conferencing and instant messaging. This feature is particularly useful for Skype users. The webcam can also double as a surveillance system with the included security software.

Overall, the camera provided decent shots and image quality was smooth while using it with Skype.

Optical Drive
Included is a built-in 8X DVD-RW optical drive manufactured jointly by Samsung and Toshiba. This drive is capable of burning & reading DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-RW, DVD+RW, DVD-RAM, CD-R/RW discs. Noise is kept to a drowned hum in most circumstances but can get noisy once it hits max speed. Testing the drive yielded no problems.

Battery
The laptop comes with a standard 6-cell battery rated at 4800mAh. The battery protrudes slightly from the back of the machine.

AC Adapter
Unlike the behemoth of a power supply that comes with the XBOX360, the ASUS power brick is small making it easy to place into the bag or out of the way when connected to the laptop. Unfortunately, it does not come with a Velcro strap to organize the lengthy power cables.

Power Management
The ASUS comes with its own power management software (Power4Gear) to regulate CPU performance under various environments. There are 8 different settings. The Battery Saving profile allows you to maximize the battery to its fullest by powering down the CPU to 25% and lowering the screen brightness. For more processor intensive tasks such as DVD playback or graphic imaging, it's best to switch to the Super Performance setting. Gamers will be happy to know that there is a dedicated Gaming profile. While I haven't noticed much difference in performance under different system profiles, I find that leaving the laptop in the High Performance setting is fine for most tasks as the Core Duo processor seems to power down when necessary anyway. And you can always switch to Windows' default management system if you're feeling unconvinced.

Software
The ASUS comes bundled with Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2 and a 90-day trial edition of Norton Anti-virus. Upon startup, you'll be presented with a vast number of utilities that will preoccupy a portion of the taskbar. ASUS felt that the laptop could be optimized completely with their own set of utilities preinstalled. They seem to add bloat more than anything else, but fortunately you can easily uninstall the software with ease.

For example, I found ASUS' wireless connectivity utility more of a hassle to deal with in connecting to my wireless network. It would constantly nag on me requesting if I wanted to connect to a wireless network, yet it had trouble connecting. Out of frustration I ended up switching to Windows' default wireless connection wizard and everything worked fine.

Setup Method

The ASUS W7J was set to run at full performance by setting the power scheme set to 'Home/Office Desk' with the AC plugged in, meaning that the CPU will not underclock while running the tests. For the battery performance test, the power scheme was set to 'Portable/Laptop'. This activates Intel's Enhanced Speedstep technology, which lowers CPU speed when not needed, thus increasing battery life. Screen brightness and audio were both set to 50%, Bluetooth was disabled and Wi-Fi were turned on. Each test was repeated 3 times to ensure accuracy. Before each test was run, the laptop was rebooted and its hard drive defragmented.

    With the Sony beating the ASUS by over 100 points, it may seem that the VAIO is clearly the better performer in 3D tasks. The HP is no competition as it employs an integrated graphics chip.

    Running the game FEAR with medium graphics settings, the ASUS was able to produce up to 40fps. Pretty good for a mid-range laptop but it still is 6 frames shy of the Sony.

    Battery Performance

    As we have just seen from the performance figures, the ASUS W7J and the Sony VAIO laptops make for one close match-up. Both display impressively close, but high figures. It seems however, that the ASUS performs better in standard 2D processing tasks while the Sony edges out - just barely - in 3D graphics performance and gaming. To truly see which laptop is the better performing, it all comes down to battery performance and the following numbers will shock you.

    Despite posting performance figures that very closely match the Sony, ASUS unfortunately came out with very dismal battery performance. In all three tests conducted, the W7J managed only a paltry ~2.5 hours of battery time before recharging. That's very disappointing considering the performance figures this laptop is capable of next to the VAIO, which is truly the W7J's direct competitor. Even the HP faired better in most tests. By today's standards, 2.5 hours just doesn't cut it.

    What should be noted, however, is ASUS - use of a 6-cell battery instead of an 8-cell, which Sony employs. Therefore, if you intend on using this laptop while on the road, plan on getting an extra spare battery or leaving it plugged in.

    Conclusion

You get a speedy processor, plenty of storage and RAM, and even a built-in webcam for taking snapshots. The gorgeous and vibrant 13.3" widescreen combined with the powerful nVidia Go video graphics card makes this laptop more than your standard run-of-the-mill workhorse, allowing you to view DVD movies or play a couple 3D-intensive games the way they were meant to be experienced (well, almost). Whether you're using the laptop solely for work or for leisure use, the ASUS is a very versatile laptop that has everything you need to do both. But at $1499, the W7J is still one heck of a steal and presents itself as a strong contender against the bigger players out there. Sony and Dell, watch out!

Overview
Welcome to the review of the Best Buy Asus G50vt –X1. This unit packs in some impressive features and hardware specifications for the price range, that's for sure! Not only that, but it's got some really interesting looks, giving the old Alienware theme a run for their money with glowing side panels, touchpad area and a fun OLED screen on the top – but it being an “affordable” gaming rig, where did it fall short if anywhere? Read on to find out...

Design
Case look and feel
This laptop has one impressive look to it – it's got a funky futuristic tribal paint scheme on the lid that grabs anyone's attention that's for sure. I'm a fan of color – and luckily like it's bigger sister the g70 (which is available in red...) screams some personality. Luckily however, good looks aren't all that the G50 has going for it. The actual case surrounding the keyboard and composing the palm rest feels solid and has a nice 'honeycomb' texture accented with silver areas and more matching blue lighted areas (when turned on). The feel can be described as “beefy” for a 15.6” laptop, I wouldn't call it obese, but it does have some bulk to it...speaking of bulk...

Size & Weight
The weight is a bit on the heavy side for a laptop of this size at 7.3 lbs. Also kind of disappointing is the size of the power supply – it is quiet larger than most standard 15” laptop supplies go. And being it a 15.6” (1368x768) display – it packs a full numeric pad on the side, but that means the bezel surround takes up the rest of the “real estate space” normally saved for a LCD. The size measures in at: 1.6 x 14.8 x 10.4 inches – and you'll find those dimensions to be some what cumbersome when shopping for a bag for this unit. It's just that much slightly larger than a 15.4” that makes the normal “pickup/packup” scenario a bit wary. Nothing detrimental, but keep that in mind when shopping for something to carry it – fit it in the bag first...with the power supply!

Keyboard
The keyboard feels good, has nice tactile response and travel – nothing incredible to mark down on that area. Flex wasn't an issue so much as the chassis on this unit seems very rigid and constructed well. The standard layout doesn't seem interrupted and keys seem to flow well. The area just above the keyboard features some touch sensitive hot launch areas that serve their own good place/time functions. However, one thing that kind of funked me out is the numpad on the right hand side. Yes – it's great it's there, but it just seemed a few mm too close to the regular keyboard for me. And it seemed a bit small for me, as I'm used to a more normal sized 10 key and it's spacing that it made me frustrated to adjust to it as it was. This is completely personal, but keep it in mind and spend a good few minutes in the store punching away and see if you mess up as much as I did.

Trackpad
Liked the touchpad – it's a Synaptics touchpad so you really can't go wrong, they have good hardware and response. However, I wouldn't recommend using it for FPS or driving gaming – it does track well but that's not what it's meant for. I will say that there was a bit of confusion as to the black plastic embellishment above the pad – it doesn't light up, and it seems out of place a bit. Also to note, this isn't a flush trackpad which, actually, I don't mind. It gives a user good tactile response and representation of where a scroll area is, and when you're at the 'edge' and need to 'pick it up and scoot some more'.

Display quality
To me, half the point of having a dedicated gaming laptop is to take advantage of the graphics processing power it can and will output – and if your display can't take advantage of those higher resolutions making flesh to fresh you would swear “they are real...” but this is where I feel the G50vt-X1 lets a gamer down immensely. Yes, it's technically .2” larger than other displays, but it's pixel count for the size make it just like a smaller screen with less resolution, and anything less than 900px in height makes me wonder what were they thinking (besides making the X2 which is the non Best Buy bargain maker...) So – the kudos of half points for being a gaming rig are lost....but not entirely. At this price range, I know Asus had to do some sort of compromises, I just wish it wasn't on the panel! Knock out 2gb of Ram, drop the HDD size a bit, and maybe toss out the lightscribe drive and you could have had a much more decent panel – and left the upgrading to the marketable “geek squad”?
Besides the lack of resolution, I had issues with the color – it was a bit washed out, contrast wasn't up to where I hoped it to be, and the viewing angles were worse than the Toshiba E105 I just reviewed. Again, if it falls short on one big thing, it's the LCD panel.

Connectivity description
For a bargain gaming rig, you get some neat and ample connectivity options. I'd call it well above average actually, but sheesh, no bluetooth? Get rid of that crazy A/b/g/n card and get bluetooth in this thing pronto! Speaking of wireless N, this machine has it and if you have the router, the extra boost in network speed is greatly appreciated. At 150 mb/s I got, it was awesome for networking or would do pretty good for peer to peer gaming. HDMI is welcomed, but again – no blu-ray to take advantage of hooking it up to a massive display. Output to second monitor was finicky – mostly due to power schemes running on battery.

Bottom: Subwoofer – which, wasn't that impressive but it was decent for a laptop. [edit: this wasn't even a subwoofer as it turns out, but just an air intake (thanks, Sean].

Upgrading possible?
A big box store has packed it to the brim pretty much, you already have 320gb hard drive space, 4gb of Ram (which is usable with the 64bit Windows OS thankfully!). And since this packs a hefty graphics card and a very capable CPU (Intel® Core™2 Duo Mobile at 2.26GHz) the only thing I would say that you could go a little crazy on would be trying to put a higher capable processor in to make it scream a bit more – but most users purchasing this unit won't be opting for that route, and there's software to overclock that speed a bit (even included with the machine). So, is upgrading possible? Yes, recommended? No. Unless you figure out a better LCD panel...

Features
Running down the list of features for this laptop, I noticed that this unit has a lot of things going for it, especially considering it's price tag. First and foremost – a very capable GPU for moderate to more intense mobile gaming. A Nvidia 9800GS -M, clocking in its 512mb of DDR3 ram and a core speed of 530 MHz, it runs comparably between a 9700GT and a 9800GTS.

HDMI means taking advantage of a higher resolution external display, which, you might severely consider after seeing the current display, and also noting, unlike the e-105 from Toshiba, Asus recognized that old-school VGA still has a place for some people and decided to keep it there – which I like.

A/B/G/N is nice, but like I stated earlier, I'd take bluetooth over the A rated frequency any day.

Webcam is normal, nothing special to me, had OK tracking and the color was acceptable. Perfect for what it is and is used for in my opinion.

An interesting feature however, is the built in mini-OLED display above the keyboard. You can customize it's display and have it cycle through memory, CPU, custom message, etc. Using the Direct Console program. I found it somewhat of a novelty for casual users, but some may find it useful, especially when running memory intensive programs/games. However, no brightness setting and you can't actually just turn it off.

Speakers:
OK, I have to wonder what the real issue is with this laptop and it's speakers. At some points, they offered great sound, good intonation (acceptable anyways for a laptop) but when I tried it through the movies, it was weak. Very weak sounding – no volume at all. I scoured the internet and tried all suggested techniques – turning of the Dolby simulated output, setting it to live, reinstalling the drivers, using the direct console to put it into entertainment mode...none of it worked for my DVD. It sounded hollow, very low in volume, and nothing changed. Otherwise during the gaming testing it sounded great, full volume and offered even better performance for 3D output. It maybe that the 5.1 output through WMP somehow hinders the volume settings, but I can't nail it. I guess, the best bet I can tell you is that I had issues with it, and it's something you might as well, so please keep it in mind!

Performance & Conclusion
Performance

Here's probably what you were really waiting for – forget all the frills and stills of this laptop, in being a gaming rig, you want to know how it really pushes things for you pixel-shading performance freaks. So, before we get going with this, head on over here if you're confused on we test laptops with dedicated GPU's.

Windows Vista Experience Score: 5.2

Everything on this laptop was rated at 5.9 except for the CPU – which is understandable since it's only rated at 2.26ghz, but 5.2 is a very respectable score.

PCMark Vantage Pro: 3935

It's got the goods so far, the performance is matching very well to the dollar amount – leading me to think this is still a great bang for the buck.

3DMark Vantage: E8541

Ok – so, I'm a little confused as to why the score for the 3DMark program kept crashing the display drivers on anything other than entry, but giving that some laptops can't even break 3000 points in Entry mode, this laptop blows it pretty good out of the water. I leave the display drivers, vista, and normal karma for a mobile graphics card at rest as to why it didn't work on performance settings.

WorldBench 6: 75

Ok – so, this also had MASSIVE problems regarding time outs and display hangs, defrag problems and due to the software startups and pop-ups Vista was throwing at the machine, it only successfully completed 80% of one of three runs. I suspect this score is not the true definition of the hardware specs involved with this machine – as it's far less than expected, in being the m70 we tested tossed out a near 92 points, this seems like it should be right up there.

Battery Performance:
DVD: 80 minutes

Nope – this is no travel entertainment laptop. To me, it was very weak. Any laptop that is 15.4” should last at least 90 minutes (close to finish that b rated comedy/comic book movie) but it didn't on this machine. I would even go as far as say that if you got rid of the “woofer” at the bottom of the unit, and opted for a larger cell unit into the chassis structure, you would make a lot more dent in the mobility market, but again, this probably isn't what it's marketed for, nor what people will be buying it for. Take is as you will. Also note – it also appears that the DVD drive likes to powerdown TOO much on entertainment mode (not sure why...) and caused the display drivers to crash 3 times during the movie, causing a restart of the whole testing process. Talk about a pain, no big deal maybe if you update the drivers, tweak the power schemes or don't mind restarting your movie every 20 minutes...but I didn't. At the end, I had to keep on with the test and mark the time alloted towards battery use to restart the DVD and enter the menu to find my scene.

Casual use: 110 minutes – Battery saver: 2 hours

2 hour use using a battery saving power scheme and 50% brightness is decent, but nowhere near what other 15.4” laptops are at. Also noting, I don't like the way the Asus handles it's power scheme management. I found that when using the console to select “power4gear battery saver” - it would change the desktop, and remove all my icons, and reduce the display brightness (normal) AND bit rate (not normal). Why reduce the bit-depth and toss the icons is beyond me, and honestly, seems silly.

Gaming:

800x600 – High detail

At 800x600 I tossed the game around like a rag doll – constant 50-55 fps. The G50 plowed through the single player demo and made it looks good doing it at this resolution. The sound however, had some stuttering moments along with when things seemed to get intense, there what seemed to be lag on the CPU end...

1024x768 – high detail
Again, the G50 had no problem running this on high detail...except it would sometimes hang the driver again...and it was also very finicky on how well it handled the graphics in some parts. REALLY lagging in normal areas (20-22 FPS) when walking, but if I let it pause and not do much and then continue, it would jump back up to 44-47 fps. Firefight moments dragged it down to mid 30's – so game play is doable, you just might want to knock down some settings a bit.

Crysis (64bit) single player testing:

Using the software testing method and utilizing it to GPU testing, it gave us some quick numbers in formats for you to see the different methods and performance gains the 9800M can pump out on this very intense game.

You'll notice that No Anti-Aliasing was chosen on any of these tests, thats because, the demo would refuse to run with any sort of AA applied, which, I'm not sure why this happened. It would hang the drivers, terminate the program and come straight back to the testing screen. This was also my basis for testing out the “apples to apples” version of the overclocking function built-in on the G50 unit. You'll notice that you do gain some performance, but is 2 FPS really worth the stress on what it's doing? I leave that up to you.

Unreal Tournament 3: Single Player Demo
Fortunately, if you have this game – go ahead and max out the settings because except for some extreme rare cases of lag (due to respawns and big confrontations) I found this machine screamed through this game and handled all the effects extremely well. This was the most fun to run around in and since everything looked so nice (minus the belittled resolution) I didn't have anything bad to say about it's performance. It pretty much stayed at a nice comfortable 50-60 FPS range. Very nice indeed.

Real Life Usage:
Using the G50 in real life – I have to admit, it didn't get out to any coffee shops, LAN parties, or power point presentation meetings...however, what I did encounter that for the most part it was very reliable in it's performance, and understanding it's limitations helped me justify that this is a pretty decent bang for the buck. Yes, there are other gaming machines out there with slightly better performance hardware / aspects, but for the most part, everything a casual / higher end gamer could need in a mobile platform is there...

Conclusion
Well, here it is. My conclusion statement. I'd like to state that even being a reviewer, I'm sometimes torn between what I feel should be a part of a gaming unit vs. what is available to consumers. With that said, I do feel you are getting a lot of decent gaming power here, but I do feel the skimped out on a few key essentials to make it a real bargain buster of the year. Is it to say that you won't find a better deal than the $1,299 advertised MSRP? Nope, and with the holiday season right around the corner, I'm sure that the big box giant Best Buy will offer some sort of sale. Do I feel that it's the best mobile gaming rig out there, no, it does fall short on some aspects (including battery life.) But I will say this, it has some really nice looks, some extra frills, offers nice connectivity and very good performance for it's price. If you were looking for a moderate laptop to do some gaming on (or take advantage of the CS4 graphics utility now) I would highly recommend looking into this machine. But keep in mind, if you want to push that pixel count higher than what it has built in, I would look elsewhere, and spend the coin on a better display, and if you're doing that, spend it on a slightly more updated GPU that can handle AA a little better to take advantage of it.

Bottom Line:
Good at moderate gaming, light entertainment, and holds it's own for the design points. Otherwise, falls a bit short on being a blow out bargain buster for a high end gaming rig, but otherwise it gets good scores and performs well.

Asus M70sa Review

Overview & Features Meet the next DTR / multimedia system provided by Asus – the M70. Our model is the M70sa model, which features the 1gb ATI HD3650 video card and a very capable 1920x1200 display with a Blu-Ray drive to enjoy it with. This is a 17” full HD widescreen laptop featuring a lot of connectivity options and of course, 1 Terabyte worth of hard drive space. Design The case on the m70 is simple yet elegant. It features a simple lid design that reminds me of the latest HP and Toshiba implementations – it is a glossy lid and bezel, along with a striking chrome accent logo and line towards the hinges. The feel of the unit is mostly very nice, however, the lid seems a little too flexible with all the plastic and it definitely takes two hands to open the lid, which is something I’m not a fan of. The latch on the chassis is gimmicky and I would much rather see a slide and lift method on the LCD bezel than a tab release on the chassis. The bottom features chrome accent around the subwoofer speaker, and is very clean – with 3 major compartments – the battery bay and the component bays. Unless you plan on upgrading your CPU, there is no real reason to open this area as all the area’s are pretty maxed out / utilized.

The battery release is simple, with an integrated lock/release tab.

Keyboard The keyboard is nice and tactile featuring matt keys surrounded by a glossy black bezel and chrome strip. Since this is a 17”, it features a number pad, which helps with 10 key entry, or simple number entry. The layout is simple, but I’m not a fan of the 10 key layout – it seems cramped and normal math function keys are located in very odd places, making 10 key additions sort of awkward, or at least to me. There is a 4 dedicated shortcut keys above the keyboard, one of which starts the “instant fun” application if pressed as a power-on instead of the normal power button. This launches Windows Media center immediately after boot – which I thought was supposed to be the instant fun aspect, but wasn’t so instant… Trackpad / Mouse The Trackpad on the M70 is an actual treat, featuring hot touch area’s that enabled by tapping the function MODE area, then tapping the associated backlit area. The left and right mouse buttons are settled on either side of a biometric scanner, and the glossy chrome LED status area just beneath it.

Speakers / Audio The speakers on the M70sa are well appointed Altec Lansing speakers on either side, with a dedicated woofer on the bottom of the unit. They too have the chrome accent surround and in our tests, performed very well for laptop speakers. The sub helped fill in the lower-midtones, but as usual, fell very short of providing much of any low – end bass. One thing that I wish this laptop had that the last laptop I reviewed had, was the dedicated volume knob that was found on the Toshiba Satellite m305 – even thought the multi-touch launch does can control audio, it would be a nice touch to have that extra “dedicated” multimedia volume control. Connectivity The M70 features a whole slew of connections, so let’s break it down by area, starting with the front of the M70sa. The front features a simple IR port, and that’s it. The knob in the center is the LCD release hinge, which, I’m not a fan of its implementation. The left side of the M70sa features the integrated TV tuner port, 2 USB 2.0 ports, mini-firewire port, SD card ready and the Blu-Ray drive. The right ports of the unit are an Express Card slot, wireless on/off switch, audio in/out/spdif, and 2 more USB 2.0 ports. The rear of the unit is actually pretty decked out as well – the furthest left features the power plug, exhaust area, AV input, HDMI output, E-Sata connector, RGB output, modem, Ethernet, and lockslot. Well, Asus has graciously bundled the M70sa with a digital antennaethat can accept OTA digital broadcast along with cable/satellite coax, and a proprietary AV video input connector (more on this later...), along with a USB mouse and a carrying bag. Display The display on the Asus M70 is striking – simply a joy. A glossy 17” widescreen featuring a resolution of 1920 x 1200 – it utilizes a FULL HD signal to the best capabilities and is a perfect resolution for a display of this size. The colors were extremely vibrant, and the glossy screen provided little to no grain washout. The horizontal viewing angles were pretty decent, and the vertical viewing angles had a nice normal range, but extreme inverse was visible much past 20-30 degrees. Even though I did complain about the LCD release mechanism, the LCD exhibited little to no creaks/flex when opening, which is very welcomed.

Size & Weight

The M70sa is not a shy machine when it comes to size, measuring in at 16.2" x 11.8" x 1.7" and weighing in just over 8 pounds with it’s 9 cell battery. Here's a shot of it against the Lenovo U110 we just reviewed. 8 pounds for a 17” DTR is actually not that bad of a weight, considering the L300 we are currently reviewing ticks in at over 9 pounds! Helping alleviate this during transportation was the included Asus / Targus co-branded carrying bag. The battery is a 9 Cell 14.8V, 5200mAh Lithium Ion battery, and is pretty hefty, but not too large to handle as shown compared to a normal sized DVD. Upgrading Options: The M70 is pretty feature stacked, and especially our M70sa model – which carries 4gb of RAM, an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T9300 (2.5GHz, 6MB L2, 800MHz FSB), and 1gb of video memory. But to top all this – the M70sa includes 1 Terabyte (TB) of hard drive storage. If you need more than that – I’m going to go far as saying that you need more than a 17” laptop, you probably need a server, a studio and a lot of external storage options. If you do so feel inclined to upgrade, you might want to look into a higher clocked CPU – and a 64bit operating system, because this model, even though equipped with 4gb of DDR2 RAM, Windows Vista Home Premium is only 32-bit, and that dodgy memory limit exists with the 32-bit version. That’s not to say other programs won’t utilize it, but this version of installed Windows won’t. Features Not to mention the power under the lid, there’s the included 2x Blu-Ray drive, and the nice TV tuner integrated with the unit. It also features an A/G/N Intel wireless network card, and a 1.3mp swivel webcam on the LCD top. I have always loved the idea of the swivel design, making snapshots and video of your surroundings / yourself and others a little easier, but I’m confused as to why it’s implemented on a 17” model. This seems like it should be saved for the 15.4” and under range, as these merit more transportation friendly dimensions and weight. A dedicated HDMI output and E-Sata port make this an excellent choice for hi-fi freaks and those who wish to add even MORE space at a very speedy performance pace. These two options make the M70 very versatile in it’s application, and I love that they are included. As stated before, Asus graciously packs the assortment of extra goodies that help you utilize this laptop on the road, and as a entertainment mogul.

Performance & Conclusion Performance I’m going to start out by stating that this system had to have a full system restore performed before it would install any benchmarking applications. That’s right; somehow, Windows installer was corrupted when I decided to remove all the bloatware that needs to be removed in order to run benchmark applications. Programs like Microsoft trial software, Norton Internet Security, etc. Once this was done, I tried installing Worldbench...no go. I tried manually starting the service, it would hang and shut down giving me error messages. I did a restore to RIGHT AFTER I opened the box, and it still had errors. That left me no choice but to open up Restore DVD and insert it. The restore process was…interesting. Merely choosing which partition to restore and then hope it did it right? Which, it did –on the third try. I’m not sure if it’s Vista’s fault, or the system configuration – but it did not pre-load all software to “out of box” state when I tried to select this option. I didn’t call the 24 hour Tech support on this matter, but I did for another, after all, installing drivers and software isn’t the hardest thing to do.

It’s hard to judge a system on specs alone, and simple benchmarks help gather what the system price tag and components mean to the end user. We’ve come up with a somewhat standard testing methodology which can be read HYPERLINK "http://www.laptoplogic.com/about/test/" t "_blank" here. Of course, those numbers will mean nothing if we don’t have reference laptops and software to go about the testing. The last system we reviewed that comes close to these hardware specs would be the Alienware m9750 and the HP HDX Dragon – but at nearing 8 and 10 months old, these systems represent a different price segment and performance ratio to what is offered today. So, even though numbers represent a lot, it’s important to note that with any technology device, 4 months from now, it could be old news, or the next best budget gaming system.

FRAPS Scores When running FRAPS within the FEAR single player demo at 800x600 graphics set to medium, we reached an average 62 FPS. Knocking the settings up to high at this setting still managed a playable 35 FPS. Bumping up the resolution to 1024x768 however, we started to see some decrease in numbers. At medium settings we gathered 30 FPS and with maximum turned on, we slowed down to a mere 14 FPS. Even though the 1gb of memory is a lot – it’s down to the clock and memory speed the HD3650 has that determines its performance. Not to mention I wasn’t a fan of the drivers and seems that FEAR played a little more like TEAR. However, this played the game moderately and would suffice for some newer 3d games, but this is no gamers machine – which isn’t exactly what it is advertised for – it is more for multimedia, however, it would have been really nice to see better implementation of 3D performance. Windows Vista Experience Score The experience score laid out the details pretty quickly – it’s a very decent performer – with, wow, imagine that – Graphics being its low point. PCMark Vantage Pro 3784 – this is a great number and proves that the T9300 coupled with 1gb of Video memory makes on productive monster, of course, 4gb or RAM and 5400 RPM drives help as well. 3DMark We are tired of video card manufacturers providing us with test equipment and drivers, and wish they would get their act together in providing a polished product to the end user, without the huss and fuss. I’m saying this because the M70sa we received had a lot of difficulty running 3dMark Vantage – it would constantly hang the display drivers in our performance test, but would run the full test in “entry” mode (not taxing the card as much and gained and in retrospect, this could be a Microsoft Vista problem more than the video card itself). To throw even more perplexity, 3dmark06 had no problem whatsoever. The 3dmark06 score of 2462 running in 1920x1200 is acceptable, and when we ran 3dmark06 on it’s default settings, we gained a score of 3297 but we would still love to see the true numbers with our updated testing methodology using the latest Dx10 support in 3dMark Vantage. The clock and slower DDR2 ram for the HD3650 are really starting to show…regards to any of these reasons, I wish there was more performance, and less stress with this setup as it is currently offered. Similar spec’d units from HP and Alienware spanked the ATI HD3650, even with its 1gb of video ram, but considering the a previous laptop (Toshiba M305) with it’s integrated card, a value of nearly 3300 3dmarks is 6 times more powerful and shows that its’ very capable of playing some modern games at moderate settings, but not to the extent super graphics freaks will rave home about. But keep in mind, the 3600 series offers full support of DX10.1 and have Pixel Shader 4.1 support as well. WorldBench 6 Beta 2 The m70 plowed through our worldbench test, providing a very healthy 97 points – one of the highest we’ve seen put out in awhile – but it is kind of expected with such hefty specifications being toted for a desktop replacement / entertainment powerhouse.

Battery Performance Watching a standard DVD use gained 1 hour and 27 minutes of runtime – very acceptable for a 17”, and when running in a moderate power setting scheme, I managed to squeeze 2 hours and 17 minutes from the machine – which, for a 17” multimedia laptop – is pretty awesome.

Heat really wasn’t a problem, but then again, I wasn’t resting this laptop on my lap that often as the weight did become a little on the heavy side after 10 or so minutes. Noise was drastically apparent only while running our extreme test runs. While watching a Blu-Ray DVD, the machine hummed along nicely, only exhibiting much of any fuss when heavily navigating within the menus. The HD tuner produced awesome color reproduction and little to no tearing when watching full action sequences, however – the reception was a little lacking (as expected from a desk antennae). I wish the cord was twice as long and had extension feet so it could sit on a window sill easier. The magnetic base was cool though, my office garbage container looked like R2-D2 for awhile. Audio / Video input I searched everywhere in the manual and all it states on how to use this is “you must purchase the included TVtuner hardware / software package to utilize this feature”…which, I’m sure I have. But even an experienced tech user as myself, I couldn’t find any program to select “video input”. WMC offered Tv input, but no configuration for A/V in. So, I thought I would try calling their 24 / 7 hour technical support line. Who knows, maybe someone there can help me out which program I’m missing from my re-installation process – after all, I only have so much time with a unit to see how it works and if I were a normal “customer” – I would be in the same scenario anyways because if I wanted to install anything right, I would have had to do the same steps as above.

Technical Support... So I called and entered ‘notebook technical support’, and I waited. 10 minutes passed before someone answered. I then told the technician my model number and what I wanted to do. He then asked for my phone number so he could call me back. Not even a slight of words – that was his first response. I was like; “you want my phone number to call me back? ….” and the technician simply restated he needed my phone number to call me back. Then asked for my first name and the model number and then asked again what I was trying to do.

What? Ok. So after this was completed, the technician hung up and I was left to wait. And I waited…and waited. After 2 days, I completed this review – no one had called me back yet. So, I can’t comment on this section, but I would love to. One thing I can comment on – is that Asus technical service, wasn’t great. In fact, I’m not sure it exists at all for phone calls, but perhaps their e-ticket system works better. Conclusion You have 17” that can operate as a DTR or a laptop, a full HD display, next gen optical format, more than enough hard drive space, a speedy system and great accessories, and besides the less than stellar 3D gaming performance on the physical side of things – I give it a highly recommended for it’s feature set. Granted, you could opt for a few high end components in some other similar sized systems from other PC manufacturers (SSD, SLI graphics, xtreme clocked chips) but for the price and performance and the inclusion of a HDTV tuner, I’d have to say this is a pretty decent value.

However…restoring a new laptop in order to install items normally was a huge turn-off, and the service department needs to pick up where their “warranty claims” begin – which is actually pretty impressive in writing, and is one reason why I would have highly recommended this unit for mobile users. They offer Zero Bright dot insurance for your LCD display for the first 30 days, and if you drop, spill on, crack, manage to light the unit on fire, or lose your computer to a power surge, they claim to replace or repair the unit…however, after what I’ve encountered with a simple question of how to get video input working…I am not sure I can attest to it. I’m sorry, but service plays a big part for me (especially when something goes wrong!), and if the service isn’t there from the reviewers end (thus far), I can’t recommend it for a consumer end.

Unfortunately, the hardships I encountered from the get go, and technical service I received - knocks the unit’s rating from an otherwise 4.5 to 3.5 – it is a fully featured laptop yes, and the price is awesome for it's feature set – but if you are going to tout your service / technical support, you better follow through - if you are comfortable with that being said, at a online price at around $1,800 you have a really nice 17" multimedia machine full of features on your hands - and does get a "recommended" award - but only if you know what you're buying, and what you're not.

Bottom Line: A full featured laptop with plenty of hard drive space, a striking full HD display married with a blu-ray drive and HDMI output, plus almost every connection you would need, it is truly an mobile entertainment / productivity machine – and if you get past some of the lackluster 3D performance, and technical service response (if needed) you have a really well rounded multimedia laptop, fully featured, and a nice price tag.

Overview

Over the past year the notebook industry has grown by leaps and bounds, but we can think of no single company that has shown as much individual growth as Asus. Asus notebooks have traditionally been regarded as high quality, but they simply weren't as widely known by consumers. Even less known was the fact that Asus makes a number of the ODM models major manufacturers buy and brand as their own. With Asus-branded notebook shipments growing and a recent design win with Dell, Asus is on the way to the top and is a formidable player in the notebook industry.

The Asus A7G is a 17' widescreen 'multimedia notebook' as described by Asus, and is one sleek package. Design has always been top notch with Asus and the A7G's sleek two-tone scheme is sophisticated, yet not too flashy. Our test model came well loaded with a speedy Pentium M 760 (2.0GHz), 1GB DDR2 533 RAM, 100GB 5400RPM Hard Drive, a built-in TV tuner, and of course ATI's fresh new Mobility Radeon X1600 GPU. The A7G is well built, continuing the quality shown by all the Asus notebooks we've come across. When you first open up the A7G, you might be taken aback by its large size. We feel that the layout of the A7G wasn't really optimized for size, as there is a fair amount of screen bezel and a large chassis area around the keyboard that make it seem rather bloated. While it is understandable that Asus didn't want or need to make the A7G slimmer or sleeker, it sure would be appreciated by most users.

The 17' WXGA+ (1440x900) ColorShine display is to say the least, breathtaking. The colors are extremely bright and vivid, thanks to both Asus' Splendid Video color enhancement software and ATI's AVIVO technology in the Mobility Radeon X1600. The brand spanking new ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 is featured only in the Asus A7G at the time of writing, and is without a doubt the best GPU for a thin & light performance application. Now the A7G isn't exactly thin or light, making us wish ATI had included a higher end GPU for gaming; candidates could have included the NVIDIA GeForce Go 7800GTX or ATI's somewhat outdated Mobility Radeon X800XT. As much as we love the design and the screen, Asus could have included a little punchier speakers being a multimedia machine and a more powerful GPU would certainly have been welcomed by gamers. A higher resolution screen option is noticeably absent, but we imagine that higher resolution panels would sacrifice the quality of this 'low resolution' WXGA+ display. Overall the A7G is a solid, well built, feature filled, and powerful machine; it is just too bad it isn't available in the U.S., yet. Design

Portability
The only 17 notebook weve seen that is remotely portable was Dells Inspiron 9300, and the A7G isnt nearly as petite as the 9300. Measuring a hefty 15.9 wide, 12.3 deep, and 1.5 thick, Asus A7G isnt going to be a machine you want to take everywhere you go. The bezel around the LCD could be smaller to allow for a smaller chassis, but then you would lose the camera and middle speaker. The only portability we recommend with this machine is moving it around your living room.

Case and Design
Weve always loved the style and design of Asus notebooks, and the A7G is no exception. The sleek two-tone chassis is stylish and hip. Youll notice the hinge is composed of a relatively small cylinder, but the LCD has a very secure attachment to the hinge cylinder and feels very solid. Since the A7G is multimedia oriented, the media control buttons are accessible even with the LCD closed.

Left to right you have CD, Previous, Next, Stop, and Play/Pause controls for media playback. There are also several LEDs visible, consisting of Power, Battery, E-Mail, and WiFi from left to right. For those who will use this as an always on desktop replacement, the e-mail indicator LED can be configured to blink when a new e-mail has arrived.

Taking a look at the interior, we see the simple two-tone color scheme and striking blue LEDs. The layout is standard, with several buttons and LEDs at the top. From left to right you have Bluetooth and Hard Drive Activity LEDs. There is also probably a WiFi indicator, but our model did not have WiFi enabled so we were unable to verify this. You also have several buttons consisting of Power4Gear, Internet Browser, E-Mail, and Touchpad Disable from left to right. The Power4Gear button cycles through Asus excellent power management profiles with an on screen indicator in the upper left hand corner. We feel that the LEDs at the top could have been larger and brighter. While we appreciate the simple look, they are difficult to view from a distance and it isnt easy to decipher what the LED actually indicates.

As always with Asus machines, we found the build quality to be top notch. There was very little case flex and overall the machine felt very solid. The only complaint we really have is that the sleek finish on the outside of the LCD is easily prone to light scratches and fingerprints. While not as bad as the Fujitsu Lifebook N3510 we reviewed, it is an annoyance for those who will be transporting the A7G a lot.

Keyboard
The A7Gs keyboard is full size, but looking at it in comparison to the chassis makes it seem diminutive. Just looking at it, one might wish the keyboard was larger and the speakers on either side smaller. However, after sitting down and typing at it for a while, the size feels quite natural and comfortable. When placing your hands to start typing, the large palm rest area supports ones hands well and contributes to an overall good typing experience.

The travel distance and quality of the keys themselves was excellent as well. While we cant say this is of Thinkpad or Powerbook quality, no one should be disappointed. The function keys available are a fairly standard load. From left to right you have Sleep (F1), wireless radio control (F2), Brightness Down (F5), Brightness Up (F6), LCD Off (F7), Display Output (F8), Mute (F10), Volume Down (F11), and Volume Up (F12). All of these buttons activate an On Screen Display in the upper left hand corner, showing you the relevant information for the selected function. The wireless radio control button can be configured to toggle one or all of the wireless radios (i.e. Bluetooth and/or WiFi).

It is a little difficult to comment on key placement here, as this model is not intended for sale in the U.S. (at least for now). Speaking purely from a standard U.S. keyboard layout, this keyboard is atrocious. The left shift key is tiny and the Enter key is abnormally shaped. I cant speak for other people, but when I place my hands on a keyboard I use the left shift key as a placeholder to get the rest of my fingers aligned properly. That is pretty much impossible on this machine! We hope against all odds that this keyboard will not find its way into any potential U.S. models, as weve not seen a keyboard like it from other companies. However, on the upside, the Russian characters are pretty to look at.

Design Continued

Touchpad
Asus chose to include a standard touchpad with two buttons and scrolling regions. It is a little larger than most touchpads which is nice, and is responsive as any. The buttons do not have a deep travel depth, instead having a very shallow and sharp click. You actually have to click them more towards the middle of the two buttons, as the outside edge of each button is apart of the frame around the touchpad. The inside area of each button are what actually clicks, so it takes a little getting used to but is not a huge nuisance.

Connectivity Options
Being a multimedia machine, we found the number of ports and options on the A7G to be plentiful.

The front is barren except for the IR transmitter/receiver.

We see a large number of ports on the rear of the A7G, which fits in with its DTR design. People who use a notebook as desktop replacement would prefer more of their ports on the back, as they have to plug/unplug devices less often. From left to right, we see the exhaust port, S-Video Out, VGA out, Parallel, and four USB 2.0 ports. The Parallel port is a surprise, although a welcome one. Not many people use parallel devices, like older printers, these days, but it cant hurt to have one. The plethora of USB ports on the back is also an excellent choice, ensuring users are able to plug in the many USB devices out there today.

From left to right we have the network & modem plugs, one USB 2.0, TV-Tuner input, Headphone jack, Microphone input, SP/DIF output [CHECK] , 4-pin Firewire, and PCMCIA slot. Directly above the PCMCIA slot is a very tiny wireless radio hardware switch and the 4-in-1 card reader. The card reader supports SD, MMC, MS, and MS Pro memory cards. Why Asus chose to include a wireless hardware switch when they already have a software function built into Fn+F2, but they could have at least made it a little larger. As is, the switch is very tiny and difficult to operate.

The right side is pretty barren, with only the optical drive and power connector present. As we've noticed with other Asus systems, the optical drive button is easy to accidentally depress if you're moving the machine around, causing the drive to eject unexpectedly.

Heat and Noise
Desktop replacement notebooks generall trend one of two ways: either with a cool & quiet cooling system or they just run blatantly warm. The A7G's CPU runs fairly cool, staying around 40 degrees Celcius when idle at 800MHz. With the CPU spiking to 2GHz or even idling at 2GHz, temperatures will quickly rise to 50 C and above. This isn't an issue for concern, just somewhat disappointing as you can feel several warm spots on the underside of the A7G. What is somewhat concerning is the hard drive temperature. In this chassis the Fujitsu hard drive stays in the upper 30 degrees C, breaking 40 C fairly easily. This is likely not a sign of the hard drive itself producing heat, but heat from the rest of the system not being dissipated properly.

Upgrading and Expansion
One thing weve loved about every recent Asus notebook weve gotten our hands on is the simplicity in upgrading. Most companies put the CPU under the keyboard, requiring you sometimes to remove the entire palm rest/bezel area around the keyboard to get to it. RAM is increasingly being found under the keyboard or in even less desirable places. Hard drives are about the only aspect that is universally simple in laptop upgrading. With the A7G, you will find every bit of end user replaceable components on the bottom of the machine. Grab yourself a very small Philips head screwdriver and in about 90 seconds youll have the 3 door covers off and the guts exposed.

Users can now easily swap the CPU, RAM, hard drive, and mini-PCI card with ease. The only negative here is that one of the RAM sticks is under the keyboard, leaving only one easily accessible. Luckily Asus clearly labels the screw holes on the bottom, so with a user's manual one can easily remove the keyboard. You couldnt ask for an easier system to upgrade!

Features

Processor/Chipset/RAM
The A7G uses Intels latest Pentium M platform, codenamed Sonoma. As most of you know, this update to the popular technology brings a faster front side bus, PCI Express, High Definition Audio, Serial ATA, DDR2 RAM, and more. Our model came loaded with the Pentium M 760, running at 2.0GHz with 2MB L2 Cache on a 533MHz FSB. The Intel 915PM chipset is used, providing discrete graphics via ATI's brand new Mobility Radeon X1600. The higher bus speeds help improve performance as does the faster RAM running synchronous with the FSB. DDR2 is also Dual Channel capable, meaning that using two identical memory modules effectively doubles your memory bandwidth. In our Sonoma Platform article, we determined that dual channel brings very little real world performance improvement. While DDR2 is also clocked higher than DDR 333, it has higher latencies which reduce the positive effect of the higher speed. Latency refers to the amount of time it takes for data to enter and leave the memory, thus higher latency produces less performance. Regardless, the Sonoma platforms new features are a big step in the right direction. The new feature sets added to the Centrino platform make mobile systems capable of doing everything a desktop can, with battery life to spare.

GPU
This notebook is the first of its kind, implementing ATIs new GPU: the Mobility Radeon X1600. Unlike the previous X600/X700 models which were near identical to the 9000 series, the X1000 series GPUs are an entirely new architecture. We will go into more detail in an upcoming gaming article about this new GPU, but lets cover the basics here. The Mobility Radeon (MR) X1600 is built on a 90nm manufacturing process, which brings smaller die sizes, lower power consumption, and potentially higher clock scaling. The architecture driving the X1600 is the same as its desktop brethren, bringing with it higher performance, a greater graphics feature set, and support for ATIs famed AVIVO multimedia technology. Shader Model 3.0 and High Dynamic Range support is finally included, catching up to where NVIDIAs GeForce 6-series had already been quite some time ago. The X1600 GPU itself has support for any type of graphics RAM imaginable, from the antiquated DDR1 to the defacto standard GDDR3 to the upcoming GDDR4, making this one robust GPU.

The MR X1600 features 12 pixel pipelines and 5 shader units, up from the 8 pixel pipelines and 4 shader units of the MR X700 it replaces. Perhaps the best part about this GPU is its thermal design power, or the amount of power that must be dissipated by the cooling system. The previous Mobility Radeon X700 was built on a 110nm manufacturing process, consumed a mere 14W, and was one of the best GPU's for a thin & light notebook; ATI's best thin & light GPU by far. Thanks to the X1600's new 90nm manufacturing process, a new power management technique called Back Biasing, and the updated PowerPlay 6.0 power management software, the Mobility Radeon X1600 dissipates up to 17W! This is ATI's first mobile 12-pipeline GPU, so we can't make a direct comparison there. However if we look at NVIDIA's GeForce Go 6800, that GPU was manufactured on a 110nm process, has 12 pipelines, and has a TDP around 40W! The X1600 really is an achievement in mobile thin & light gaming, offering very respectable performance in machines that can be still be considered portable! Obviously the Asus A7G is not one of those machines, but we can expect to see the X1600 in 15.4" machines and hopefully even smaller chassis!

ATIs AVIVO technology is not one to scoffed at, especially for multimedia notebook users. People are increasingly playing high definition video content, performing large amounts of video editing & converting, and also wouldnt mind higher image quality in general on their laptops. AVIVO promises to improve all of this, and in fact it delivers in some respects. Anandtech recently took AVIVOs performance in desktop form for a test drive here, and found some promising results. The big feature AVIVO is now able to support is H.264 decode acceleration. H.264 is an increasingly popular high definition video format, which is a key building block for upcoming Blu-ray and HD-DVD optical media. It offers incredible quality with more efficient use of space, but it comes at the expense of a severe toll on the CPU.

Above is a chart from an ATI PDF on H.264, which pretty clearly shows the demand H.264 can place on a system. With a lot of emphasis being placed on this new format, companies involved in the video arena would do well to ensure that consumers can gracefully change over to the new format. As you can see in Anandtechs article, ATIs GPU accelerated H.264 decoder was able to reduce CPU load during playback of the H.264 video by a fairly large margin. NVIDIA promised something similar with their GeForce 6 series GPUs for MPEG and WMV-HD formats, but could never quite deliver as well as they promised. ATI is already on the right track with H.264 acceleration and will hopefully continue on that same track. To be fair, while we feel that ATI is closer to what they promised as far as decode acceleration than NVIDIA was, NVIDIA did eventually accomplish sufficient decode acceleration despite some broken promises on the original desktop GeForce 6-series AGP video cards.

For a more in-depth discussion of all the benefits AVIVO is supposed to provide, feel free to check out ATIs whitepaper on the subject here. The promises of AVIVO technology are quite enticing, and will be a huge hit if they are implemented as promised. AVIVO offers several key improvements: improved 2D & video playback quality, improved analog to digital conversion (for instance with TV capture/viewing), hardware assisted video compression/transcode, hardware assisted video decoding, and superior post-processing. Weve seen evidence of the video decoding performance, but the video compression/transcoding is only so far implemented through ATIs very efficient AVIVO Video Converter software. Image quality is a very relative subject, as some users dont even notice a difference and others dont even care. While we can say the image quality on the A7G was absolutely top notch, we cant say that will necessarily be true on any AVIVO-enabled notebook. AVIVO looks to be a great step forward for mobile multimedia support, but time will tell if it is everything its cracked up to be. As a last note, not every notebook with a Mobility Radeon X1000-series GPU will necessarily have AVIVO support. It is up to the manufacturer to include full support for AVIVO, and we hope that each and every single one does.

Display
While we were less than impressed with the Asus V6Vs 15 SXGA+ ColorShine screen, the A7G far surpasses the V6V and most other notebook screens. Not only is it extremely bright and vibrant without being overly harsh, but colors and viewing angles are superb. Asus proprietary Splendid Video engine combined with ATIs AVIVO technology make for one stellar image that anyone can appreciate. Surprisingly, there is almost no color inversion when viewing the screen from just about any angle. In addition to no color inversion, the image barely fades from view at even extreme angles.

There was no noticeable ghosting during gaming, which is a plus given the sweet GPU and multimedia orientation. This 17 display runs at a WXGA+ resolution, or 1440x900. WXGA+ is a good choice considering WUXGA (1920x1200) would make text too small for most people, but the option should have been included. As a lover of high resolutions, WXGA+ is a little limiting at 17 but is certainly bearable. Overall we love this screen to death. A WUXGA option would be nice for those high resolution gurus like myself, but the top notch quality makes up for it.

Sound
The first thing youll notice when listening to the A7Gs speakers is the volume. These speakers get PLENTY loud, whether it be in games or music. In fact, if you let the default Asus screensaver kick on it will startle you with its upbeat music blaring. Surprisingly though, there is little bass coming from the A7Gs sound system. We would expect such a large multimedia machine to include either higher quality speakers or a built-in subwoofer, neither of which the A7G includes. If the A7G or a similar variant ever makes it to U.S. shores, Asus would do well to beef up the bass a little bit. Other companies have successfully implemented an integrated subwoofer for added bass, so there is no excuse.

Luckily the onboard sound quality is as good as can be expected, given Asus chose to implement the Sonoma platforms Intel High Definition Audio standard. Below is a brief comparison of the defacto AC97 codec and Intels Azalea High Def Audio:

Wi-Fi
Unfortunately theres really not anything to say here. For whatever reason, the WiFi was in our unit was disabled at the hardware level by Asus prior to distribution. It came installed with a standard Intel 2915ABG card. The A7G will have the option of either the 2915ABG (802.11a/b/g) or the standard 2200BG (802.11b/g).

Bluetooth
The A7G also features integrated Bluetooth wireless technology to wirelessly sync with Bluetooth enabled devices like printers, mice, keyboard, PDA, and cellular phones. We connected a Radtech BT500 bluetooth mouse with ease, thanks to the Add Bluetooth Device Wizard that detected the mouse immediately with no software drivers needed in order for it to operate. The user can easily enable/disable the Bluetooth radio either with the Fn+F2 key or a small hardware switch on the left side of the machine. Although Bluetooth works within a smaller scope, it is useful for connecting multiple devices simultaneously. If Bluetooth and WiFi are not enough, the A7G comes with infared (IrDA) communication that allows you to synchronize with PDAs or mobile phones.

Optical Drive
OurA7G test model came with a Matshita DVD-RAM optical drive, capable of writing any disc you throw at it, including Dual Layer DVD's. This of course includes both DVD formats, CD-R's, and even the obscure DVD-RAM. With burn speeds competitive with other notebook drives and every feature support you could want, we are very pleased with the A7G's optical drive.

The supported read and write capabilities are as follows:

  • Read: 24X CD-ROM/CD-R, 8X DVD-ROM, 6X DVD-ROM Dual Layer, 4X DVD +/- R/RW, 2X DVD-RAM
  • Write: 24X CD-R, 16X CD-RW, 8X DVD +/- R, 2.4x DVD +/- R DL, 4X DVD +/- RW, 3X DVD-RAM

Hard Drive
Asus chose to include the top notch Fujitsu MHV2100AH; featuring a 100GB capacity, 5400RPM spindle speed, and 8MB cache. In our 2.5 Hard Drive Roundup, we found it to perform very well and the quietest of the bunch. Asus of course packages it in a simple drive caddy for storage in the machine. A 120GB 5400RPM or 100GB 7200RPM drive would have been a nice option, but the Fujitsu drive performs adequately. 60GB and 80GB drives are also available.

Battery
An 8-cell battery is standard, featuring a capacity of 4800mAh rated at 71Whr with19V voltage. Battery life however was pretty dismal at around 2 hours, despite the respectable capacity. The main reason for this is of course going to be the giant and bright LCD panel. Still, we are a bit disappointed that a better battery life couldnt be achieved using stock settings. Our benchmarks are run with the power scheme set to Portable/Laptop for consistency, but Asus excellent Power4Gear software should allow for some extra juice out of the A7G.

A bit of an oddity to note here is that Asus places the battery at the front of the machine, whereas almost any other laptop has the battery located at the back. There is no real negative to this that we can tell, just an oddity to point out.

AC Adapter
The included AC adapter measures 5 long x 2.25 wide x 1.25 thick, which is about average for a 17" machine. Both ends of the power cables are about 5 feet long. These cables could be a little longer for additional flexibility, but most people will just plug this in and leave it there most likely. There is no cable management to speak of, again probably lending to the fact that this machine wasn't meant to go out and about.

Integrated Webcam
Almost a requisite for multimedia machines these days, the Asus A7G sports an integrated 1.3 megapixel CMOS digital camera. This is capable taking still shots or recording video. You will need to supply your own recording or communication software to actually use it as a camera/webcam. The video isn't very clear, but you can make out the person without too much difficulty. The camera is capable of 320x240 or 640x480 video resolution.

Asus Video Security
The only program included to really put the camera to use is Asus' Video Security. While more of a gimmick from this reviewer's opinion, the software does include options for triggering the camera, recording options, network/e-mail alerts, and more. Spy on anyone who might want to use your laptop or even go near it!

Asus Mobile Theater
Reminiscent of the Windows Media Center Edition interface, Asus has bundled their own Mobile Theater 3.0 software.

It is very straight forward to use and should cover the bases for just about any multimedia use. The biggest complaint though is this program seems very bloated. It loads very slowly, advances between sections very slowly, and just feels slow in general! The Windows XP Media Center Edition interface is much smoother and quicker, and you usually get a remote with MCE machines.

TV Tuner
Integrated TV tuners are becoming more common in today's multimedia machines and the A7G is no exception. We did not have a long time with this machine and unfortunately could not extensively test the TV tuner, but did make sure to play around with it.

I loaded up the TV Tuner interface in Asus Mobile Theater before even hooking up the cable connection. Immediately upon plugging in the included adapter (pictured above), I was greeted with a crisp, clear picture. Truthfully, I was rather surprised at the image quality. Having used a few TV tuner cards in desktop machines, I was expecting a fairly grainy yet bearable image. The A7G's tuner picture was anything but grainy, almost looking better than the TV sitting next to it! Skin color tones were still not perfectly reproduced, but sharpness and clarity was very good. Part of this is due to ATI's AVIVO technology, which we previously discussed. One of AVIVO's features is that it enhances analog to digital conversion, and if this is the result of that then we are certainly impressed! Without a more thorough investigation of integrated TV tuner performance we can't chalk this one up as a pure win for AVIVO, but it definitely contributed and we are impressed.

A remote control would have been a nice addition for this multimedia machine. Regardless, Asus' Mobile Theater 3.0 software will allow you to record, schedule, and organize your favorite TV programs (or whatever other input source you hook up to the TV tuner). Again we prefer the Windows XP Media Center Edition interface to Asus' Mobile Theater, as well as the commonly included remote with MCE machines.

Setup Method

The Asus A7G was set to run at full performance by setting the power scheme set to 'Home/Office Desk' with the AC plugged in, meaning that the CPU will not underclock while running the tests. For the battery performance test, the power scheme was set to 'Portable/Laptop'. This activates Intel's Enhanced Speedstep technology, which lowers CPU speed when not needed, thus increasing battery life. Screen brightness and audio were both set to 50% and Wi-Fi were turned on. Each test was repeated 3 times to ensure accuracy. Before each test was run, the laptop was rebooted and its hard drive defragmented.

Bapco SYSmark2004SE is popular benchmark suite consists of two different performance scenarios and generates an overall score by taking the geometric mean of the individual scores.

  • Internet Content Creation: In this scenario, the content creator creates a product related website targeting a broadband and narrowband audience. The user first renders a 3D model to a bitmap, while preparing web pages using a web site publishing tool. The user opens a video editing package, creates a movie from several raw input movie cuts and sound cuts and starts exporting it. While waiting on this operation, the user imports the rendered image into an image-processing package; modifies it and saves the results. Back in the 3D modeling software, the user modifies a 3D model and exports it to a vector-graphics format. Once the movie is assembled, the user edits it and creates special effects using one of the modified images as input. The user extracts content from an archive. Meanwhile, he uses an animation creation tool to open the exported 3D vector graphics file. He modifies it by including other pictures and optimizes it for faster animation. The final movie with the special effects is then compressed in a format that can be broadcast over broadband Internet. The web site is given the final touches and the system is scanned for viruses.
  • Office Productivity: In this scenario, the office productivity user creates a marketing presentation and supporting documents for a new product. The user receives email containing a collection of documents in a compressed file. The user reviews his email and updates his calendar while a virus checking software scans the system. The corporate web site is viewed and the user begins creating the collateral documents. The user also accesses a database and runs some queries. A collection of documents are compressed. The queries' results are imported into a spreadsheet and used to generate graphical charts. The user then transcribes a document.. The user edits and adds elements to a slide show template. Finally, the user looks at the results of his work (both the slide show and the portable document) in an Internet browser.

Bapco MobileMark 2005 is the latest version of the premier notebook battery life and performance under battery life metric based on real world applications.

  • Office Productivity: The workloads in this category model a mobile professional at a fictitious automobile company. The worker creates documents using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint, accesses email, and creates graphics and animation with Photoshop and Flash to include in a multimedia presentation. An Internet browser is used to view presentations. The user also invokes file compression and virus detection in the background.
  • DVD Playback: The DVD playback 2005 workload is based on a 1 hours 55 minute movie that BAPCo has created from content provided by BMW. The DVD playback test starts the movie playerapplication, sets up a full screen playback, and the loops over the content on the disk in the DVDplayer. This playback will continue until system shutdown at battery depletion.

3DMark 2001 SE PRO build 3.3.0 measures graphics performance by benchmarking the CPU, memory, and graphics through a series of 21 tests, including simulated games, theoretical tests, DX8 feature tests, and image quality tests. Resolution was set to 1024x768 with all default settings.

3DMark 2003 build 3.6.0 measures DX9 performance through a series of 3D game based sound, graphics, and CPU tests. Resolution was set to 1024x768 with all default settings.

PCMark 2005 Advanced build 1.1.0 is the latest update to Futuremark's popular overall system benchmarking program. The 2005 version adds multithreading, DirectX 9, Windows Media Player 10, virus scanning, High Defintion video playback (WMVHD), and a vast number of other tests to its suite. Testing your computer's CPU, RAM, hard drive and graphics card, PCMark05 drives your computer to the max to determine its strengths and weaknesses.

The results here are rather surprising. Since the Z60m and A7G are nearly identical in configuration, aside from the GPU, we would expect the scores to be near identical. However in the Office Productivity test the A7G scored an unprecented 145, bringing its total score to a whopping 163. We really have no explanation for this disparity. The A7G's RAM is in dual channel configuration, but that would not cause such a large difference. The only other major difference that might affect the Office test is that the A7G's hard drive is formatted with FAT32, but that should not cause such a huge performance difference, if any. Unfortunately we did not have enough time with this machine to re-test this to see if it is a fluke.

PCMark05 Advanced
Performance was very respectable across all systems. CPU performance is close, but the 2.0GHz Pentium M's pull ahead. DDR2's high latency shows its weakeness against the CL 2.5 DDR 400 in the MS-1029. Graphics are no contest with the MS-1029's X700 GPU and while hard drives are all very close, the Hitachi 5K100's high areal density wins.

The A7G leads the pack here in total score thanks to its superior GPU. As you can see, the RAM, hard drive, and CPU are near identical between the A7G and Z60m leaving the GPU to be the deciding factor. MSI's MS-1029 falls behind due to its CPU and hard drive.

3D Performance

Unfortunately we don't have full gaming benchmarks for the MSI MS-1029, but we would rather compare the Dell Inspiron 9300 anyway. The 9300 features NVIDIA's GeForce Go 6800 256MB, a 12-pipeline GPU like the MR X1600. However you cannot simply look at two 12-pipeline GPU's and say given that equal clocks, the performance is equal. We're looking at apples and oranges here, and it will be interesting to see how ATI's low power 12-pipe GPU compares to NVIDIA's relatively power hungry, previous generation 12-pipeline GPU.

3DMark 2001 SE

3DMark01 is generally CPU limited, but we see two major distinctions between the GPU classes. Obviously the 4-pipeline X600 falls last, but the two 12-pipe GPU's are pretty close. The 9300 does pretty respectably considering its considerably slower 1.6GHz CPU. This just goes to show the power of NVIDIA's "old" Go 6800.

3DMark 2003

3DMark 2003 is mostly GPU limited, at least in the notebook realm. We see a bit of an interesting turn here. Even though the 9300 has a slower CPU and less RAM, the peppy 256MB GeForce Go 6800 shows a discrete lead over the A7G's X1600 GPU. ATI usually pulls a lot of extra performance out of their cards with future driver releases, and we expect the A7G to be supported by the Mobility Catalyst drivers. We might see these tables turn with future driver revisions!

3DMark 05

3DMark 2005 is 100% GPU limited with all but the NVIDIA GeForce Go7800GTX, which isn't featured here. Here we see the 9300 and the A7G flip flop, with the A7G's MR X1600 GPU leading pretty steadily over the Go 6800. This is mostly reflected by the X1600's newer architecture and more recent drivers.

Gaming Performance

Doom 3

The A7G's Mobility Radeon X1600 is more than playable on low setting, but when you go to High Image Quality and 4xAA it quickly chokes. 256MB VRAM would help this issue out quite a bit, but Doom 3 is still highly optimized for NVIDIA cards and the Go 6800 has a huge advantage there; just like the X1600 will have in Half Life 2 below.

Half Life 2

Half Life 2 on the other hand favors ATI GPU's and even a relatively basic one like the X600 can maintain very reasonable frame rates. While the Go 6800 is much more powerful than the X600, the ATI-optimized Source graphics engine allows the X600 to compete very well. Of course the new MR X1600 takes the cake here in both categories, showing a decent headway over the Go 6800. The extra VRAM on the Go 6800 (256MB compared to the X1600's 128MB) doesn't even help it that much with AA/AF enabled, allowing the X1600 to win by a fair margin. Battery Performance

Unfortunately battery life is the only category where the A7G really, really falls behind. We understand it must take a generous amount of power to run the LCD, but it is still an 8-cell battery with a 71Whr battery. The Z60m's 9-cell has 85Whr of juice, yet lasts quite a bit longer.

The same trend is apparent in the Office test, showing usage that better reflects what most readers will experience.

Let's just hope you don't try to watch a Lord of the Rings movie, because the A7G will die before it can finish. As we mentioned in the battery section though, this is with the default Portable/Laptop power scheme and screen brightness at half. If one were to use Asus' Power4Gear software to optimize settings for DVD viewing, one might have a shot of at least getting close to the credits.

Recommendation
It is hard not to like the Asus A7G 17 multimedia notebook. All of the key ingredients are there: top notch screen, good performance, a very decent GPU, and a slick design to boot. Multimedia-centric users will appreciate the spacious, breathtaking display and loud speakers. In fact, this laptop would make a great coffee table center piece. The Asus screensaver included flashes some pretty graphics, plays a peppy tune, and even uses the onboard camera to display video amidst the swirling images. Even the more serious gamers shouldnt shy away from the A7G. ATIs new Mobility Radeon X1600 doesnt break any mobile graphics performance records, but it does play just about every game out there with very respectable performance while consuming very little power. Overall we have a well built, well performing notebook with a full set of multimedia features.

As you can see from the Pros & Cons section, we dont have a lot of bad things to say about the A7G. However you can also see we dont have a lot of good things to say. We are satisfied with this notebook and particularly love the screen, but not much is really blowing our skirts up. Fujitsu offers a similar machine in their Lifebook models, which sport integrated TV tuners, similarly beautiful screens, and a host of multimedia features. In fact the Lifebooks offer Windows Media Center edition as an operating system, something the A7G does not offer. The current line of Lifebooks do not have anything impressive in the GPU category though, which will turn off gamers. The comparable Lifebook, model N6220, is similarly priced and comes with a Pentium M 750 (1.86GHz), 1GB DDR2 533 RAM, 17" WXGA+, 200GB dual hard drives, Dual Layer DVDRW, TV Tuner, and Windows XP Media Center Edition. Unfortunately the GPU is only an ATI Mobility Radeon X600 with 256MB Hypermemory. The 200GB dual hard drives are a bonus for a true multimedia enthuasiast, while the GPU is a bane for gamers. The differences in the two models are clearly between multimedia and gaming, which should make the choice easy for most consumers.

Of course this discussion is all elementary, as the A7G is not being released in the U.S. at this time. For all those international readers out there, the A7G is a machine definitely worth looking at. It brings a lot to the table and has a few notable features to distinguish itself from the competition, namely the screen and GPU. Just be sure to consider other options like Fujitsus Lifebook models, as they may offer certain features that are more beneficial for your particular uses.

Availability/Warranty
The Asus A7G is not available in the United States, but should be available in Europe in early 2006 for a MSRP of 1399, or roughly $2200USD.
