Apple MacBook 2008 Release

Overview
It's big news whenever Apple announces new products and now Apple’s bestselling consumer notebook receives the long rumored major redesign that is no doubt, another stunner. Just when you thought Apple couldn’t make the previous generation MacBook any better, they come around and offer this aluminum and glass beauty that is even thinner, lighter, and more powerful than before. Now that Apple has brought its renewed MacBooks ($1299 starting) and MacBook Pros ($1999 starting) even closer together by offering the same design, engineering, and -for the first time on the MacBook - aluminum body to both notebook lines, the once straightforward consumer and pro-line product differentiation is slowly fading away. Is this the best MacBook to date? Is it safe to call the MacBook, the MacBook Pro "mini"? Read on.

Design
The new MacBook and MacBook Pro make some significant strides in the design department. First, the MacBook for the first time, joins the MacBook Pro in offering an all-aluminum body, ditching the white polycarbonate plastic that once defined the consumer line. In fact, both machines look pretty much identical to each other - offering a black glass bezel screen and black "chiclet-style" keyboards to reflect the new Apple design direction first introduced with the current iMac and iPhone. It's a stunner for sure. The exterior borrows cues from the MacBook Air using tapered edges that trick you into thinking it's even thinner than it already is. The magnetic latch opens and closes the display with buttery smoothness and without mechanical parts. Aa satisfyingly solid "thunk" can be heard when closed. Available in the more expensive $1599 model are LED backlit keys - a first for the MacBook.

Aside from the switch to a fully aluminum casing that replaces the now-defunct white plastic and/or black matte finish of the previous generation, Apple is touting its new manufacturing process as a technological and engineering breakthrough. Using a full slab of aluminum to construct the MacBook and MacBook Pro, not only does this revolutionary process create a body and chassis that is much stiffer with no flexing, these new notebooks use less mechanical screws, parts and pieces to construct together, and thus allow Apple is able to achieve a lighter and thinner product. The result is a notebook that is so clean and so sleek looking in design, it's devoid of any evidence of screws to piece it together and without any vents, confirms that this new design doubles as an effective heatsink.

While it's nice to see the MacBook now offer the same look and materials as the MacBook Pro, Apple may now run the risk of cannibalizing sales of its own pricier MacBook Pros, as they both look almost identical to each other and features-wise, the line between the two is blurring. Call it the MacBook Pro mini if you will in appearance, Apple has revolutionized a new way to build quality notebooks that are also environmental friendly.

Size and Weight
Impressively, the new MacBook is even thinner and lighter than before, achieving a thickness of only .95 " - the same as the new MacBook Pro. At 4.5 pounds, the new MacBook is 1.5 pounds lighter than the outgoing model with weight evenly distributed across thanks to its unibody construction (read: less parts). At 12.78" x 8.94", the new machines are pretty much identical in dimensions to the last generation models.

Keyboard

Love it or hate it, Apple has now transitioned its entire Mac lineup to the retro-looking "chiclet-style" keyboard with the new MacBooks. Rather than color match the keys with the aluminum body, Apple's new design direction employs the use of black keys to give the notebook an interesting design contrast. The downside of having black keys is noticeable fingerprint smudging from oily fingers; At least it won't look and get dirty like the older white MacBooks. Aesthetics aside, the full-size keyboard is a real pleasure to type on with very solid and satisfying clicks. The keys may be flat and spaced out, but it's oh-so-comfortable to type on with just the right amount of key travel and spring action. The higher end model also offers LED backlit keys for the first time on a MacBook - once again, blurring the lines between the MacBook and MacBook Pro in features.

Display
With a gorgeous 13.3" LED-backlit LCD screen fully encased beneath a black bezeled glass, the MacBook's display is stunning to look at even when powered off. The glossy finish makes colors really pop and adds to its enhanced vibrance, but at the cost of massive glare, making outdoor viewing difficult. Indoor viewing is not as bad, but reflections abound so be mindful of viewing angles and tilt adjustments. At first glance, the display seems identical to the previous MacBook screen with the same 1280x800 native resolution, but thanks to the new LED-backlighting, the display is evenly lit across the screen and noticeably brighter than the previous generation models. Watching movies was a real treat even though you'll find yourself seeing your own reflection in lighted areas. But when compared to the MacBook Pro's larger screen, the MacBook's picture quality is still inferior and you'll notice the contrast and blacks drop out when viewed from an angle - The MacBook Pro's, on the otherhand, looks great at any angle. This is a big reason why Apple would like for you to pay the extra money to go Pro for the better screen. A built-in iSight camera is included as well like before on the top of the display.

Buttonless Glass Trackpad
Apple once again leads the competition by offering zero buttons...no really! Apple has created the first "buttonless" trackpad built entirely of glass that also includes multi-touch technology. The entire trackpad is essential a button in itself where pushing down creates a solid click to confirm depresses. While it takes getting used to at first, the trackpad actually turns out to be very intuitive with a smooth glossy feel. The MacBook Air introduced 3-finger scrolling and the MacBook and MacBook Pro now offer 4-finger multi-touch scrolling for calling upon Expose and Spaces functionality. While quirky, you'll soon appreciate the wonders the new glassy trackpad's buttonless design provides.

Connectivity
Apple has shrewdly and neatly moved all ports to the left side of the notebook (the right side now occupies the lone optical drive), giving it a very clean and organized look so there's no cluttered wires coming out of either side. With the MacBook, you get 2 USB 2.0 ports, gigabit ethernet port, audio in/out jacks, MagSafe charge port, and the new mini DisplayPort that replaces the old mini-DVI out in an effort to save precious component space. Also of convenience is the battery meter on the same side. In a surprising move, Apple has curiously decided to omit FireWire in the new MacBook that was previous made standard across the entire Mac lineup. Now, the only way for media heads to take advantage of FireWire connectivity is to shell up the $700 for the MacBook Pro or buy a pricey adapter. While most people can argue that FireWire's adoption is dwindling in favor of USB, one of the unique things that made FireWire so special for Macs is the target disk feature, allowing the computer to boot OS X off any FireWire external drive. Call it cost-cutting or the death of FireWire adoption, we call it a disappointment.

The DisplayPort is another interesting move on Apple's part to capitalize on a new standard that not only saves component space from the larger DVI and mini-DVI ports, but transitions across all future Macs. Unfortunately, Apple is skimping on the accessories as you'll have to shell the hefty $99 for the mini DisplayPort adapter kit to connect an external monitor. Harsh.

For the common consumer, the MacBook provides just enough of what you need and nothing you don't in terms of available ports. Trimming the fat, Apple still doesn't offer any built-in digital card reader into the unit when compared to the competition and ExpressCard is a feature you'll only find on the MacBook Pro. Limited but more than sufficient.

Upgrading
One of the pains of owning an Apple notebook before was the difficulty in upgrading the basic hardware components. It took a few dozen tiny screws just to get to the harddrive! Not so with these new notebooks. Apple clearly did it's homework when redesigning the MacBook and MacBook Pro, making it very easy to open and upgrade. Only 2 aluminum plates pieces hold the base together, providing easy access into the harddrive compartment and RAM slots through a simple flip of a latche. The big news is the removable battery, now tucked neatly beneath one panel next to the hard drive. Upgrading is limited to your standard harddrive upgrade (SATA or SSD) and adding more RAM (up to 4GB max).

Features:

The MacBook is a real engineering marvel. It's stunning good looks compliment the bevy of new advanced technology and engineering features. The Intel Core2Duo 2.0Ghz model ($1299) we received proved plenty capable of handling most common computing tasks and comes with a 160gb harddrive and 2gb of RAM (with the 1066Mhz FSB). A 2.4Ghz model is available as well for an additional $300 sticker price and includes a 250Gb SATA drive. Both models offer the option of the pricey but fast SSD drive.

Ditching the weak integrated graphics chipset from Intel, the MacBook finally offers a dedicated true graphics engine in the form of the nVidia GeForce 9400M making for better handling of 3D graphics and video. The results, are quite noticeable in speed and video performance throughout the system. Another great feature with this card is that it results in lower heat generation as the CPU no longer has to work so hard in processing these tasks. However, don't expect the GPU to bowl you over in graphics-heavy applications though (read gaming). But, the 9400M certainly does pack a good amount of 3D punch to your videos, media, and gaming sessions, especially with the likes of the new Adobe Photoshop utilizing thus features.

Wireless-N, Bluetooth, SuperDrive and iSight are all standard features as usual.

Heat and noise wasn't much of an issue with the new MacBooks thanks to the entire aluminum unibody acting as a giant heatsink. The notebook runs warm but not quite as hot as older models and a soft hum can be heard only when the fan kicks in intermittently. No issues here. In our battery tests, watching a DVD yielded about 2:40 of juice, and in basic tasks such as web browsing and word processing, a respectable 4:30 of life.

Conclusion
Overall, we found the new MacBook a real pleasure to use as with all Mac products we've tested. It's a gorgeous, sexy piece of machinery and certainly the best MacBook yet. But we do question Apple's decision to make the MacBook so closely identical in looks and features to the MacBook Pro... Anyway, at $1299 starting, it's a tad more expensive than we had hoped it would be, but you do get a lot for your money namely the aluminum casing, glassy multi-touch buttonless trackpad and of course, the revolutionary unibody "brick" construction and for a whole $700 cheaper than the cheapest MacBook Pro model. Nonetheless it's a excellent buy for one of the best notebooks around on the market. Some may not like Apple's new design direction (myself included) utilizing black keys to contrast the aluminum, but there's no denying this is one of the best looking laptops available.

Bottom Line:
With a dedicated GPU and aluminum body, it might be "safe" to call the MacBook the "true" successor to the highly heralded Powerbook 12". Well...almost - the lack of FireWire is a serious hit and it's still a tad too big. What about calling it a MacBook Pro mini? Not quite but its darn close. A better display and graphics card, Firewire, ExpressCard slot, and LED keys are all that gets in the way of the $700 difference, features wise. Yet, the lines between the consumer and pro models are fading away ever so slightly...Suddenly $1299 feels like a great bargain.

Overview & Features

Apple’s much anticipated and much talked about ultra-portable notebook computer has arrived and it’s definitely a looker. This incredibly razor-thin computer is quite possibly the sexiest little laptop to come around. Ever. With a height of just 0.76 inches at its thickest (0.16” at the tip), the MacBook Air is the thinnest notebook on the market. And with looks that Paris Hilton will certainly love, the MBA is going to attract attention wherever you tote this 3 lb. aluminum beauty around…even inside a manila folder!

While this is Apple’s first ultraportable, it is still considerably larger sitting next to the sub notebooks from the likes of Sony and Fujitsu. The glossy 13.3” widescreen LCD, borrowed from the consumer MacBook line, displays bright and crisp visuals with plenty of real estate. At 12.8” wide by 8.94” deep, the MacBook Air even has dimensions that are near-identical to the “regular” MacBook’s. In fact, aside from the weight and depth factor, the MacBook Air is literally just a really, really thin MacBook. Moreover, it’s even 2” wider than the now-defunct PowerBook 12”, hardly “ultraportable” in comparison. Sorry, but once you go beyond 13 inches, the computer is no longer ultraportable to me.

Features & Technology

At $1799 starting, you don’t get a lot of features or performance compared to comparably priced notebooks, but it is amazing how much Apple was able to cram into such a thin frame. The base model comes with a 1.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Low Voltage processor with 2GB of DDR2 RAM (which is not user replaceable or upgradeable), 802.11b/g/n WiFi, iSight camera built-in, illuminated keyboard, and a 60GB 1.8" hard-drive running at 4200RPM. Unique to the MBA is the large multi-touch touchpad with technology borrowed from the iPhone for finger gesture commands within applications The three-finger scroll is particularly useful, allowing the user to scroll forward or back in-between web pages, and pinching allows for zooming functionality. Expect this technology to make its way across future Apple laptops.

Those with extra money to burn can option for the 1.8GHz processor and ridiculously expensive $1000 "upgrade" for the faster yet smaller 64GB solid state disk (SSD) drive, which we strongly urge against as the performance gains are minimal. Fully loaded, you're looking at a $3000 laptop that doesn't really do much for you other than lighten your wallet. But then again, value isn’t the name of the game here. The MacBook Air is a status symbol; kind of like a tiny, expensive purse. It isn’t practical, but damn does it look good under your arm out & about.

Intel went to great lengths to engineer a micro-sized version of the venerable Low Voltage Core 2 Duo processor exclusively for the MacBook Air. The CPU is 60% smaller than the standard C2D laptop processor which is no easy feat, and thus for the lucky MBA buyer, much of the development costs get passed down in the price tag. The re-engineering was necessary to meet the real estate demands of this diminutive system.

Connectivity, Performance, & Conclusion

Those looking to find a fully featured multimedia notebook will certainly have to look elsewhere. There's just ONE USB 2.0 port available to connect an external device and FYI: not all USB devices may fit into the port - a major design flaw. There is an audio out jack and a micro-DVI port, but that is all! No Ethernet jack, no 56K model, no media card reader or firewire ports. Nothing. Not even stereo sound! This is definitely a companion laptop for the fashion conscious mobile user, but that is about the limit of its practicality. Out of the box, you will have rely on WiFi only to access data without a USB cable. To install off a CD or DVD, a special utility allows the MacBook Air to remotely access a nearby computer’s optical drive and stream the data over WiFi. However, the utility cripples the drive’s capabilities, limiting the user to read/write capabilities only, meaning no remote video viewing, music playback or disc burning. Bummer. If you desperately need dedicated optical support, you'll have to shell out another $99 for the external SuperDrive, which of course only works with the MacBook Air. There is also a USB Ethernet adapter available for $29. At least these “optional” accessories are priced fairly reasonably.

Performance

Performance-wise, the MacBook Air is decent at best. It works wonderfully like any Mac would, with the excellent and swift Leopard OS X, but it lags behind the considerably cheaper MacBooks and upmarket MacBook Pros. 3D performance is a non-starter of course, with integrated graphics. Worse, the fixed battery only manages a disappointing 3-4 hours of juice under normal usage.

As you can see from the table above, the Intel processor platform has a significant processing advantage over the old PowerPC days. Even more interesting is the fact that despite being higher clocked, the Core Duo is about as fast as the lower clocked Core 2 Duo.

Conclusion

  • Large for a ultra-portable class laptop
  • Did I mention it's incredibly expensive?

So is the MacBook Air worth the hype? Sure, the super thin profile is very unique and eye catching, but once the eye candy wears off you aren’t left with much. If you are purely out on the go, perhaps with a desktop to handle connectivity and storage needs, the MacBook Air will fit anywhere, but will leave you wanting with no replaceable battery for additional runtime and no integrated mobile broadband; you would have to occupy your only USB port if you needed connectivity other than WiFi. For users who have a notebook as their primary computer, they will have to buy a plethora of accessories just to make the MacBook Air usable. The MBA-specific optical drive, USB Ethernet adapter, and a USB hub come to mind as the bare minimum one would need to run the MBA at a desk without feeling constrained. Did I mention you can’t add any more memory?

Now does all this mean it is a terrible notebook? Not at all. It does succeed in its goal: to be the ‘halo’ product for Apple, the uber-high end machine that isn’t incredibly practical – think of it as using a Lamborghini to get groceries. But true mobile computing users need to carefully consider their needs before making the plunge with the MacBook Air. When you consider that the MacBook Pro is 1.0” thin with far more practical features and a similar starting price, you might wonder if a 0.16-0.76” thickness is all it’s cracked up to be. Well, at least it brings a whole new meaning to the term, "I got an MBA."

The new 13-inch widescreen Apple MacBook is the powerful new value laptop, replacing the Apple iBook. Available in both white and black colors, the MacBook is Apple's first completely redesigned Intel-based laptop in the thin and light spectrum. Although this laptop is meant to be thin-and-light, weighing 5.2 pounds is relatively heavy for its size. But built to last, the MacBook is composed of a durable polycarbonate shell that provides a unique solid feel. The brightly lit, glossy widescreen display is breathtaking, and the keyboard is top notch in comfort and tactile feedback.

The MacBook's new features have raised the standard for what value-focused laptop should be. While the rest of Apple's computers have simply just received Intel chips in similar enclosures to their PowerPC predecessors (like the MacBook Pro), the MacBook was built from the ground up using Intel's fast and efficient Core Duo processor. The MacBook is arguably the ultimate companion for students and even business professionals since Apple officially supports Windows XP via the BootCamp software.

Some major improvements over the iBook include a wider trackpad, magnetic LCD closure, MagSafe AC adaptor, fantastic keyboard (which can easily be removed for disassembly), and a built-in iSight webcam. Apple has also recently upgraded their iLife suite of software packages, as well as its Front Row multimedia software. Meanwhile, other hardware improvements include improved feet on bottom of the laptop so that they do not fall off, as well as internal improvements including customer replaceable hard drive, digital audio-input, extensive wireless connectivity options, extend desktop support with external display, and extended battery life. However, if you are a high performance user, hardcore gamer or graphic designer you may want to consider Apple's MacBook Pro lineup for more horsepower and standard performance features.

Design

Portability
Weighing in at 5.2 pounds, 1.08' thick, 12.78' wide, and 8.92' deep the 13-inch MacBook isn't the most portable machine out there. This 13.3' machine weighs closer to most 14-15' laptops, but shouldn't trouble most users with its size.

Case and Design
When the computer is on, the glowing white Apple logo radiates from the black matte finish to add aesthetic appeal. Similar to the Apple iPod, the MacBook is available in black or white colors to give users more personal preference.

The form factor and aesthetic nature of the MacBook is arguably superior to other thin and light notebooks in its class. The case is made of a durable polycarbonate with a matte-like feel. Much like the Apple iPod, the new MacBook features a very simplistic look and feel. Everything is right where it needs to be.

All peripherals are plugged in on the left of the keyboard, the Superdrive to the right of the keyboard, and the keyboard features the standard Apple keys. The only other items visually present are the LCD, track pad, an IR port, and indicator light next to it, the glowing Apple logo on the lid, and that's it. This computer relishes in simplicity, yet is just as efficient if not more so than any other laptop.

Keyboard
The keyboard has a rounded edge bezel and is offset deep enough so that when the notebook is closed, the keyboard cannot come in contact with the MacBook's screen. This is a considerable improvement over Apple's iBook that was known for key marks on its screen. The new keyboard has flatter keys that have been separated from each other so they aren't touching. This is a new keyboard design for an Apple laptop, but it is a considerable improvement. The new keyboard only takes a short while to get used to and once you do you may miss it when using any other.

The tactile feel of the keys is just right, and the keys are lightly audible, but the sound and feel are satisfying. The iBook's keyboard was arguably too shallow and quiet for most users' tastes.

Touch pad
Apple has increased the size of the track pad on both the MacBook and MacBook Pros to match the widescreen design. At first it was a little strange to have such a big track pad, but since Apple has incorporated touch scrolling and double finger right-click, the larger track pad is necessary, and easy to use. The touch scrolling is rather simple and requires a user to simply place two fingers slightly separated on the track pad, then move the fingers in the direction one wishes to scroll (up, down, left, right - can be adjusted in the System Preferences).

Lastly, do not be fooled by the single button on the track pad, the MacBook and Mac OS X do feature right-click on just about everything a PC and Windows does. To right click, a user must simply place the cursor over whatever it is they wish to right click, then place a second finger on the track pad and click the pad's button with a thumb, and a 'right-click' contextual menu will display (requires being turned on in System Preferences).

Front
The front of the MacBook simply has a small LED on the right to let you know when the computer is asleep, and the small circular item next to it is the IR port for the Apple remote.

Rear
The back of the MacBook shows two speakers that reflect sound off the bottom portion of the lid when opened and operating.

Left Side
The left side of the MacBook sports the MagSafe power adapter, Gigabit Ethernet, Mini-DVI port (can connect to S-video or VGA with adaptors sold separately), FireWire 400 port, two USB 2.0 ports, a digital audio in port, and a digital audio out port.

Right Side
The right side of the MacBook contains only the slot loading Superdrive (CD/DVD burner).

Heat and Noise
The MacBook runs warmer than its predecessor. After extensive use, the MacBook's fans engage to cool things down rather quickly. The noise level of the fans is apparent but not enough to ruin your music listening. Other than the occasional sound of the hard drive, the MacBook is a considerably quiet computer.

Upgrading and Expansion
Unlike the past Apple portable machines, the MacBook makes upgrading easy, with easily upgradeable hard drive and RAM.

Inserting RAM into the MacBook is as simple as pulling a lever, and placing the new RAM into the slot and lever loading mechanism.

If the above images make it look simple to remove the hard drive, it is because it actually is that simple.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
For wireless connectivity, the MacBook includes 802.11g (Airport Extreme) and Bluetooth 2.0 + Enhanced Data Rate. We experienced no problems to speak of during our testing. The MacBook was capable of picking up eight local Wi-Fi networks, where as a PowerBook was only capable of picking up three Wi-Fi networks from the exact same location.

Webcam (iSight)
Built directly into the top bezel of the MacBook is a 640x480 webcam called iSight, which can be used for video conferencing, or simply capturing still images. The MacBook includes Apples iChat AV software that allows users to video chat via AIM, Jabber, and GoogleTalk. Also included is Photobooth, an application which allows you to take snap shots of your self and e-mail them to friends or family easily without any complications. The iSight works seamlessly when connecting with another user who has a webcamera, thanks to the iChat software. Overall, image quality was great, even in low light conditions.

Apple Remote
The Apple Remote is a simple 6-button remote control capable of controlling Apples Front Row media software. Front Row enables users to select media content such as music and videos via the remote. While it seems like a somewhat trivial feature, it is surprisingly handy and soon youll wonder what you did without it. See our video of the Front Row feature in the Quick Glance section of this review.


Battery
The MacBooks battery is a different form factor than Apples past batteries. However, the re-designed battery enables Apple to grant easy access to the RAM and hard drive. This lithium-polymer battery is rated at 55-watt-hours and comes with integrated charge indicating LEDs to notify you how much battery life is left. Overall, battery life performed average compared to PC counterpart.

AC Adapter
The MacBook comes with a new AC adapter that is considerably smaller than the MacBook Pros adapter.

The MacBook also features MagSafe, a magnetic adaptor that connects to the laptop.

The advantage of the MagSafe connector is that if something pulls on the AC cord, it can detach itself from the computer, preventing the computer from falling down with it. How clever!

Software
The MacBooks software offerings put most PCs to shame. Included with Mac OS 10.4 are several critical applications such as Spotlight (real-time file search), Dashboard (widgets), Mail (e-mail client), iChat AV (AIM, Jabber, GoogleTalk), Safari (web browser), Address Book, QuickTime, iCal (calendar), DVD Player, and Xcode software development tools. The MacBook also ships with Apples iLife suite preinstalled that includes iTunes, iPhoto (photo sorting and editing), iMovie HD (movie creation and editing), iDVD (DVD creation and editing), iWeb (website creation and blogging), and Garageband (software music creation and editing). Also installed is a trial version of Microsoft Office, TextEdit for basic word processing and several other system utilities. The MacBook also features Front Row, Apples media viewing software that allows users to select movies, songs, and other media via the Apple Remote.

Users can also download Apples new free beta software called Boot Camp that allows users to install Windows XP SP 2 and above. Boot Camp does not include a copy of Windows, so users must provide or purchase Windows themselves. What Boot Camp does is easily walk users through burning a CD that includes drivers for Windows, and then install and run Windows. The process is extremely simple if a user has ever installed Windows XP before, and is more time-consuming than difficult. One thing we noticed when installing Boot Camp is to leave all peripherals, especially a mouse, unplugged during the Windows install process.

The MacBook is also capable of running other operating systems such as Linux, although Boot Camp wont walk users through the process. It would be best to consult any guides posted by the creators of the distribution you wish to install. Our advice to visit a local Apple Store and see the robust operating and software available on the MacBook.

Setup Method

The MacBook was set to run at full performance by setting the power scheme set to 'Better Performance'' with the AC plugged in, meaning that the CPU will not underclock while running the tests. For the battery performance test, the power scheme was set to 'Battery Energy Savings'. This activates Intel Speedsteptechnology, which lowers CPU speed when not needed, thus increasing battery life. Screen brightness and audio were both set to 50%, Bluetooth was turned off and Wi-Fi were turned on. Each test was repeated 3 times to ensure accuracy. Before each test was run, the laptop was rebooted.

Battery Performance

Brightness on each machine was set to 50% and set to 'BetterBattery Life' in the power scheme to reduce clock speed.We ran the 141 minute movie Batman Begins and to no surprise, the MacBook's Intel Core Duo lasted increasingly longer than the PowerBook G4.


With 1 hour and 22 minutes remaining after the completion of the 141 minute Batman Begins movie, the MacBook is left with more battery time.

Apples new laptop offers huge features at a huge value. From its rich features to its clean design, everything on this laptop is right where it should be, and it has the system performance to match. Thanks to Intels dual core processor, the overall system runs faster than before, leaving the G4 behind. Expect the MacBook to be updated with Intels faster yet battery efficient Intel Core 2 Duo or Merom soon.
Lets also keep in mind the MacBooks unique features you wont find on any PC: the MagSafe AC adapter, the robust software & operating system, the ability to boot Windows and Linux natively, beautiful display, remote control, slot-loading DVD burner, and intelligent power built-in. There are some things we would like to see to perfect this machine even more like include dedicated graphics, loose the weight, and maybe even reduce the thickness. Who should buy this machine? Students or anyone on a budget. You wont find a PC equivalent come close to the features loaded with the MacBook. Best of all, this laptop wont dent your wallet.

Overview

Apple Computers are known for their elegant design, innovation, and relative ease-of-use. But with those competencies, it comes at a cost. The cheapest PowerBook starts at $1,599 for the 12-inch model. While that may be steep to most consumers considering the aggressive lower price offerings from a PC laptop, Apple managed to stay competitive in the budget end with the iBook line.

When the iBook was initially released, it was slow in performance and behind in features compared to the PowerBook. This year, Apple decided to increase the iBooks' performance and features while maintaining a low price tag. The new Apple iBook now comes in two display sizes, the smaller 12-inch and larger 14-inch; offering a slot-loading CD, combo CD-RW/DVD, or SuperDrive DVD-R burning drive (14-inch only), PowerPC G4 processors running at 1.2GHz or 1.33GHz, and integrated Airport Extreme 802.11b/g Wi-Fi starting at an affordable $999.

The iBook line is an Apple entry-level notebook computer, targeted towards the price conscious consumers such as students and home users. The new 12-inch iBook is a lightweight all-in-one consumer laptop that retains Apple's trademark elegant design and fully loaded with all the features and power one would need for homework, browsing the web wirelessly, watching DVDs, and creating video or music.


Design

Portability
Looking at the iBook 12-inch computer from above while the display is closed, it looks almost like a perfect square with an Apple logo in the center. Not quite a perfect square, its dimensions resembles more like a textbook, as the iBook is 11.2 inches wide, 9.1 inches long and 1.35 inches thick. Apple considers the iBook the lightest all-in-one consumer notebook on the market, weighing in at a mere 4.9 pounds. You can argue that claim by considering the IBM ThinkPad T42, which also weighs 4.9 pounds and offers similar if not more features than the iBook 12-inch. In any case, the iBook 12-inch is very portable, light enough to carry around for long durations and its compact size allows you to fit it in virtually any laptop carrying case or backpack. I carried around the iBook computer to my old college campus and I was pleasantly surprised on how light it felt in my backpack (I suppose the other reason was I didn't have to carry textbooks along with the iBook).

Case and Design Layout
The white case surrounding the iBook appears very elegant. The rounded edges, white shiny polished case presents a clean and simple design. The iBook is designed to be durable, being able to resist impact from lugging it around. The top lid and bottom case is made from polycarbonate plastic, which is the same high-grade material used in bulletproof glass. Inside, the frame is made from magnesium, strengthening the iBook even more. This allows the iBook to be tucked into a backpack or carrying case along with the rest of your books without worrying about damaging the screen. However, the surface does seem it can be easily scratched.


The LCD is held on by a thick plastic hinge that feels a bit tight when opening and closing the display. Below the hinge, there is a vent to exhaust the heat in the rear.

The full-size keyboard consists of 12 function keys, 4 arrow keys, and incorporates the numeric keypad in the right-center of the keyboard. The convenient function keys allow you to control the brightness, volume, and to eject the disc from the slot-loading drive. The keys are positioned comfortably for me, but feel light and flimsy when typing; almost feels cheap. The keys exhibit a fairly loud noise while typing, and it doesn't sound too pleasant either. The iBook's keyboard just isn't solid as the keyboard from the PowerBook, which feels more comfortable and sounds more pleasant to type with.


The trackpad supports double-tapping and drag capabilities, a convenient feature to have instead of pressing the touchpad button. The trackpad is sensitive to my finger, and moves the cursor accurately on screen. There is only one button for the touchpad, which is inconvenient if you need to 'right-click'. Instead, you must hold down the CTRL key and then push the touchpad button in order to bring up the options menu. Similar to the loud noise the keyboard makes when typing, the touchpad button creates a loud noise when clicking as well.

The ports are easily accessible on the left side and the slot-loading drive is located on the right side. This is convenient since I don't have to turn the iBook around to the back side in order to connect a device. I can simply just plug in my device in the ports located on the left side. Another benefit is the iBook does not have any protruding doors so you don't have to worry about breaking or snapping anything off when carrying it around.

In addition to the vents in the rear (below the latch), there are also vents located on the left side to dispense the heat. The iBook was nearly silent the majority of the time I used it, even when the processor was set to full performance. After a short use, the iBook felt warm underneath but even after extensive use it became slightly warmer and still operated relatively quiet.

Upgrading
You can enhance the performance by increasing memory to a maximum of 1.25GB at a speed of 266MHz or PC2100 (DDR266). The iBook computer comes with 256MB of DDR SDRAM PC2100 already installed on the motherboard. There is one memory slot that can be accessed by removing the keyboard. Simply slide the two plastic tabs located on the keyboard to unlock it. You can also replace or remove the Airport Extreme card in the same area as well. Replacing the hard drive is more complicated, as it requires you to disassemble the entire laptop apart.



Features

Processor
The iBook 12-inch computer is powered by the PowerPC G4 processor clocked at 1.2GHz with Velocity Engine and 512K L2 cache on 133MHz system bus. This is a big improvement over the slower G3 processor from the previous iBook generation. The system bus for the PowerBook line is a faster 167MHz. This affects the speed performance since it directly affects the memory performance and bandwidth. The iBook performs fairly decent and 'snappy' with most applications, such as iTunes, Microsoft Office 2004, and Safari web browser. In addition, OS X can handle multi-tasking better than Windows. Apple offers the faster G4 1.33GHz in the iBook 14-inch model.

By accessing the Energy Saver in the operating system, the G4 processor can be set to run at the highest performance (1.2GHz), or reduced performance to conserve more energy. The third option is to set the processor performance to automatic (runs at reduced speeds initially), which allows the computer to automatically switch back and forth between the highest and reduced settings in order to optimize energy use, depending on the applications' demand. I always set the performance to highest when I connect the AC adapter to my iBook. The best way to maximize battery operating time is to set the processor to either automatic or reduced when using the battery.

GPU
The ATI Mobility RADEON 9200 with 32MB DDR SDRAM powers the graphics processing. The ATI RADEON 9200 supports AGP 4X and multi-display support and features SMARTSHADER, SMOOTHVISION, and more while consuming less power. In fact, the RADEON 9200 dynamically adjusts the power consumption based on user activity.


Warcraft 3

This RADEON 9200 is capable in handling most games such as Quake 3 and Warcraft 3. I was impressed on how smooth both games ran. In terms of the visual quality, the graphics were stunning as I couldn't differentiate the graphics displayed between the RADEON 9700 in the PowerBook 17-inch 1.5GHz and the RADEON 9200 in the iBook.

Display
The 12-inch XGA LCD screen offers 1024 x 768 pixel resolution. Overall, the screen is sharp and the colors are vivid, thanks to the RADEON 9200 and the GUI of Mac OS X. The screen brightness can be adjusted with the function key, with a total of 16 brightness settings (1 being the lowest and 16 being the brightest). Setting the screen brightness from 8 through 16 is sufficient and enjoyable for my viewing but still isn't as bright as the display from the Sony VAIO with XBRITE technology.


The viewing angle is decent as the color and brightness shifts noticeably when viewing the screen from vertical and horizontal angles. The iBook doesn't come close to the wide viewing angle offered on the PowerBook 17-inch but provides better viewing angle than the display on the IBM ThinkPad T42 14-inch XGA.

To test DVD playback, I played Spiderman 2 and overall it ran smooth as silk. Color and images displayed brilliantly. The pixel-refresh rate is quite fast as I did not encounter any ghosting effects while watching Spiderman 2. Even better, quickly scrolling through a webpage full of text did not exhibit motion blur or any blurriness. Impressive!

Sound
The built-in stereo speakers are located above the keyboard on opposing sides. Simply put, the sound quality is poor during MP3 playback. Bass was limited and power was insufficient.

The microphone is built-in to the LCD and the port is located in the upper-right of the display. A neat feature is iChat (connects through AOL Instant Messenger) allows you to voice-conference another iChat user using the built-in microphone.

Wireless
Unlike the previous generation iBooks, Airport Extreme comes standard. The Airport Extreme wireless antennas are built-in on each side of the LCD for optimal reception. Airport Extreme is Apple's name for Wi-Fi 802.11g. It's also backwards compatible with 802.11b (11MBps). Airport Extreme is capable of reaching 54MBps (real speeds are approximately 20-35MBps depending on range and interference). Like the PowerBook, Airport Extreme offers a feature called 'interference robustness', which provides stronger connection between the client and base station and also minimizes interference from other devices that use 2.4GHz such as cordless phones and microwaves.

The signal strength reported 13 out of 15 (15 being excellent) within 4-15 ft. range from my Netgear router. I took the iBook downstairs to the kitchen, which is 20-25 ft. away through 2 rooms from my Netgear router and signal level only dropped to 11 bars out of 15. I also had no problems connecting to the wireless network at my old college's library.

Apple offers an optional Bluetooth module for $50 more at the Apple Store online. Bluetooth wireless allows you to sync with other Bluetooth enabled peripherals such as mobile phones and handles. In addition, you can connect wirelessly with a Bluetooth enabled keyboard or mouse.

Connections
The iBook comes with all the essential ports to expand your communication and data transfer capabilities. The iBook comes with two High-Speed USB 2.0 ports located side-by-side to connect external devices such as printers, scanners, digital cameras, keyboards, and pen drives. Each USB 2.0 port can reach transfer speeds up to 480MBps and is backwards compatible with older USB 1.0/1.1. I connected my Sandisk Cruzer USB Pen Drive and my Logitech MX510 mouse to each USB 2.0 port and both were automatically detected by Mac OS X and operated flawlessly. The iBook also includes one FireWire 400 port. The FireWire port can transfer speeds up to 400MBps and can provide power to your devices such as an external FireWire hard disk, digital video camcorder, or Apple iSight video camera. You can also connect FireWire directly to another computer's FireWire port to transfer files.

There is one Ethernet (10/100BASE-T) port for connecting to a network (Router) or to a cable or DSL modem to access the Internet. This is a faster alternative than using Wireless to transfer files within your network and speeds can reach up to 100MBps. The internal 56 K V.92 modem allows you to connect an analog phone line to access the Internet. The headphone jack allows for connecting external speakers, headphones or other sound devices. There is a security slot to connect an optional security cable lock to secure your iBook down to a desk or table.

The iBook has a video out port with an adapter that gives you the ability to connect a display or projector with a VGA connector. This is called video mirroring, which enables the same images to appear simultaneously on the internal monitor (Apple iBook) and external monitor (TV or projector). Unfortunately, screen-spanning is excluded from the iBook but available on the PowerBook models. Apple offers an optional $19 Video Adapter with composite and S-video connector for TVs or video projector to enable screen-mirroring.

Optical Drive and Storage
Like other Apple laptops,the iBook comes with a slot-loading combo drive (DVD-ROM/CD-RW) made by Matshita. When I insert a disc an inch inside the drive, the drive will automatically suck the rest of the disc inside to begin reading. Pushing the eject key on the keyboard will release the disc. The slot-loading combo drive will write CD-R discs at up to 24x, CD-RW discs at up to 16x, and will read CD-ROM discs at 24x. It reads DVD-Rom discs at up to 8x. I was able to burn a couple of music CDs effortlessly and flawlessly using iTunes. The only complaint I have about the drive is it's annoyingly loud when reading a disc. Reading a DVD movie is loud when it initially reads the DVD disc but the drive spins down as the movie progresses.

The iBook comes with a Fujitsu 30GB ATA/100 2.5' hard drive with 4200 RPM. 30GB is limited storage space for some people who may want to store larger movie files or have a great number of music files. Apple offers an optional 60GB or 80GB hard drive when customizing your iBook. Nevertheless, the Fujitsu hard drive is extremely silent in idle and seek modes. It's barely audible in a quiet room. The hard drive is also rubber mounted to resist impact.

Battery
The battery included is a 50-watt lithium-ion rechargeable battery and is advertised by Apple to operate up to 6 hours on a single charge. Although I never was able to use the iBook for 6 hours, I was able to use it for web browsing and word processing for a little over 5 hours with the screen brightness down to 30% and the processor set to reduced. This is quite impressive, thanks to the power saving features capabilities of the G4 processor, ATI Mobility RADEON 9200, and Mac OS X Panther. Another great feature is you can check the battery level by looking at the indicator lights on the battery itself by simply pushing a button. The lights show how much charge is left.

Closing the lid while the iBook is on will put it in power-saving sleep mode. The computer barely drains the battery while in sleep mode. Another great feature is when you open the lid the iBook will wake up instantly.

Application Performance

PhotoShop CS: Time it takes for Adobe Photoshop CS to open and read a 120MB PSD file. Note: Photoshop will open and read the file much faster when initially loading Photoshop prior to running the tests. Therefore, I restarted the computer each time prior to initiating the test (Ran 3 times, used the median score).

Battery life Performance
The test was done by running a DVD movie on full-screen with sound on, and brightness set to mid-level (8/16 bars). The iBook 12-inch lasted 3 hours and 33 minutes in our DVD drain performance test and came on top of the PowerBook 15-inch due to its larger capacity battery and less power demand.

Recommendation:
The Apple iBook G4 12-inch is considered in all-in-one consumer notebook computer. Meaning, it's a laptop that has all the necessary features and capabilities for home users and students to browse the web wirelessly, burn CDs, play games, watch DVD's, or do homework. Personally, I really like the iBook 12-inch, especially for what it's worth. The battery operating time is outstanding, as I can use it for over 4 hours doing simple word processing, chat, E-mail, and web browsing. I also like the simple and clean white design. But despite those great things, a few things were disturbing, such as the noise exhibited from the keyboard and optical drive. The keyboard feels flimsy and cheap, as I would prefer the keyboard on the PowerBook or keyboards from PC makers such as IBM and Sony. Users who need a portable computer for graphics design, video and audio editing, or gaming may want to opt for one of the PowerBook models as it provides better performance and a couple of more features that will satisfy your demands.

The iBook is the perfect blend of features, performance, and portability. For only $999 for the 12-inch model, this is highly recommended for students and home users that want a portable computer to handle all their needs. Essentially, the iBook is the perfect entry-level notebook computer to get a taste of Mac OS X Panther and what Apple has to offer.
